제15회 《암벽술사》의 추락

「사유, 슌란이 보여. 《귀신》도. 여기가 마지막 싸움터겠군」

슌란과 《숲의 유인》 남매가 준비한, 《귀신》과 결판을 낼 장소. 그 외길 동굴 위에 올라가 산을 감시하던 다우의 시야에, 믿음직스러운 동료와 오늘 이 자리에서 악연을 끊어야 할 숙적의 모습이 함께 들어왔다.

출혈은 멈췄지만 여전히 몸을 옥죄는 통증을 견디며, 다우는 격앙되어 여동생에게 말을 걸었다. 마침내 이날이…… 지금까지 자신과 동포들이 저자에게 입은 상처와 악몽의 연쇄고리를 끊어낼 수만 있다면 지금의 통증은 별것 아니다.

「미안, 다우 오빠………… 쉽게 생각했었나 봐……」

하지만 정작 사유는 그녀답지 않게 괴롭게 대답했다. 동굴 벽면에 꽂힌 화살을 일일이 살피고, 때로는 뽑고, 때로는 더 꽂는다. 《진천의 뇌검》을 안고 안개 속을 뛰는 사유. 침착한 두 눈동자 밑에 식은 땀이 조금 흐른다.

「왜 그래, 사유？ 너답지 않잖아. 무슨 문젠데？ 함께 고민하는 것도 내 역할이라고」

지붕 위의 다우에겐 사유의 표정이 안 보인다. 그녀가 하는 작업의 의미도 모른다. 그래도 다우는 그녀의 불안감을 함께 극복할 수 있을 거라고 굳게 확신하고 있다.

「《진천의 뇌검》…… 예상보다 “분석”하기가 어려워. 기본 성질 자체는 예상대로인 것 같은데…… 《뇌수》가 오래 사용한 탓에 조금 변질됐어. 출력 조정이 《뇌수》의 전격에 최적화됐나 봐」

「아하, 원리는 잘 모르겠지만 네가 예상했던 게 딱히 틀리진 않단 뜻이지？」

「맞아…… 그래서 시간만 있으면 어떻게든……」

사유는 그렇게 말하면서도 화살과 고대유물로 안개와 방전을 조정하기 위해 서두른다. 서두르면 정확도가 떨어질 수도 있지만, 그럼에도 그는 진땀 나는 손을 늦추지 못한다.

「간단하군, 내가 슌란과 합류해서 시간을 벌다가 준비가 되면 놈을 동굴 속으로 밀어 넣을게！」

다우는 동굴 지붕에서 내려와 목소리가 닿는 거리까지 와 있던 슌란을 향해 손을 흔들며 내달린다.

「다우 오빠, 그 몸으론……！」

「피는 멎었어, 한 번 정도는 더 싸울 수 있어！ 사유의 꿈을 위해 뭐든 하는 게 내 인생 목표니까！」

다우는 자신의 알통을 두드려 보인다. 사유는 그가 《심》 수행 덕분에 근육을 자유자재로 조작한다는 걸 안다. 아마도 그 나름대로 부상에 대한 불안감을 덜어낸 것이리라. 사실 그가 아직 달릴 수 있는 것도, 붕대나 약초보단 체간근을 수축해 출혈과 상처의 확산을 막았기 때문이었다.

「더구나 이번엔 슌란도 있잖아！ 네 예상과 방법은 틀리지 않았어, 기죽지 마！ 너답게 끝까지 최선을 다해. 너무 서두르지 말고 정확히！」

자신의 존재의의를 깨달은 슌란과 《귀신》을 향해 다친 몸을 이끌고 내달리는 다우. 누가 뭐라든 그는 싸울 것이다.

「오빠…… 참…… 그렇게 무리하면 뒷감당은 누가 하라고」

사유는 투덜대면서도 움직이는 손을 늦추지 않았다. 자신의 지혜를 믿고 정확하게…… 다우가 말한 대로.

다우는 늘 무모한 행동을 한다. 하지만 지금도 늘 함께다. 그래서 사유는 그에게 자신을 맡기고, 자신이 나아가야 할 길을 계속 찾아 나갈 수 있는 것이다.

「다우, 움직여도 괜찮아！？」

「그건 내가 할 말이다, 슌란！ 아무래도 놈이랑 한 판 더 붙어야 할 것 같거든！」

「……역시 그랬군」

다우가 왔다는 건 슌란의 나쁜 예감이 적중했음을 뜻했다. 두 사람이 합류했지만 다시 《귀신》과의 싸움에 대비해야 한다. 그리고 동굴 안의 안개. 슌란은 지금부터 뭘 해야 하는 지 충분히 이해할 수 있었다.

「산원숭이까지…… 좋다, 죽인다…… 전부 죽여 주마…… 나는…… 모두 부숴 주마…… 모조리……！」

슌란의 등 뒤로 습격해 오는 《귀신》의 공허한 눈에선 아무것도 찾아볼 수 없다. 대신, 온몸에서 맥동하며 육체를 조종하는 문신에선 살의와 투쟁심이 검붉은 오라로 가시화되어 분출하였다.

「이봐, 저 녀석 표정이 심상치 않아 보이는데？ 그야말로 “귀신”이야, 별명이 마음에 드는 건가？」

「놈은 완전히 제정신이 아니야！ 아주 고삐가 풀렸을지도 모르니까 조심해！」

「그럼 오히려 함정에 빠뜨리기 쉽지 않아！？」

「그러면 좋을 텐데 말이지！」

《귀신》은 성대에서 나오는 건지 온몸의 문신이 공기를 진동시키는 건지 모를 포효와 함께 자신의 오른팔에 거대한 암석검을 만들기 시작한다. 키의 세 배는 됨직한 그 칼은, 그 자신의 육체마저 잠식하고 좀먹고 있었다. 슌란과 다우를 향해 휘두르는 암석검 표면의 요철에서 나는 괴기한 풍절음. 두 사람이 양쪽으로 뛰어서 검을 피하자 근처의 거목이 낙뢰를 맞은 것처럼 격렬히 폭발한다.

「저런 괴물 같은 힘이！ 저런 걸 숨기고 있었어！？」

「봉인해 뒀던 만큼 부하가 크겠지만…… 그렇다고 자멸을 기대할 순 없어……！」

《귀신》을 충동질하는 투쟁심과 살의…… 그의 눈에서 생기는 빼앗았지만 여전히 불타오르며 육체를 조종한다. 모든 걸 멸할 때까지 멈추지 않을 정도의 열량이다. 한계를 뛰어넘는 한계가 언제 찾아와도 이상하지 않다.

「그래, 더구나 난 성미가 급해. 자멸 따윈 기대 안 해！ 붙어 보자 슌란, 지금 여기서！」

「당연한 말씀！」

슌란은 마치 효시처럼 《귀신》의 오른팔 뿌리 부분에 엽총을 쏜다. 그러나 그 탄환은 《귀신》이 왼손으로 만든 방벽에 막혀, 암석검을 무력화하는 데엔 실패했다.

「암벽의 수비는 변함없나……！」

「흥, 이런 것만 쓸데없이 착실한 녀석이군……！」

「그렇다면 놈의 큰 동작을 이용하자！」

「좋은 생각이야！」

《귀신》은 호흡마저도 각인의 제어를 받는 듯하다. 그럼에도 다시 피로 물든 팔로 암석검을 크게 휘두른다.

「엎드려！」

두 번째는 가로 베기였다. 머리 위에서 요동치는 뒤틀린 기류가 두 사람의 머리 가죽을 불쾌하게 핥는다.

「옆구리가 비었어, 방금 전의 복수다！」

「잠깐, 다우！ 그런 의미가……」

슌란이 제지하기도 전에 《귀신》의 허점을 향해 돌격하는 다우. 통증을 분노로 바꿔 《귀신》의 옆구리를 친다.

「좋아, 한 방 더！」

손맛을 느낀 다우는 다음 일격으로 《귀신》의 정강이에 돌려차기를 하지만…… 두 번째 공격은 불발이었다. 공중을 이리저리 날아다니다 몸이 지면에 내동댕이쳐진 건 《귀신》이 아니라 다우였다. 《귀신》은 큰 공격을 한 후에도 왼손으로 작은 카운터 공격을 구사할 정도의 여력은 늘 갖추고 있었다.

「으억…… 이성을 상실했는데도 반격은 잊지 않는군！」

「총격도 막아냈잖아…… 큰 동작을 이용하자는 말은 유인하잔 얘기였어. 저걸 봐」

《귀신》의 발밑엔 마치 지면을 도려낸 듯 부자연스러운 발자국이 형성되어 있었다. 제어할 수 없는 힘으로 자신보다 훨씬 무거운 암석을 휘두르는 그는, 그때마다 오히려 몸을 휘청이며 의도치 않게 끌려다니고 있었다.

이어서 《귀신》이 세 번째 공격을 구사한다. 슌란은 다우와는 반대 방향으로 뛴다. 사유가 기다리는, 안개가 점점 옅어지기 시작한 동굴을 향해서.

「시간은 충분히 벌었어. 이제 끝이 보여！」

「그래, 어차피 끝장을 내는 방법은 똑같으니！ 좋아, 그렇다면 얘기가 간단해져！」

다우는 슌란의 의도를 파악하고 곧장 《귀신》 앞에 나선다. 그리고 정면으로 《귀신》에게 돌격할 준비를 하는 것처럼 보이더니.

「그렇게 나올 줄 알았지！」

《귀신》의 암석검이 허공을 가른다.

돌격할 것 같던 다우를 향한 《귀신》의 네 번째 공격. 그 끝이 표적이 있어야 할 공간을 포착했을 때, 다우는 이미 뛰어서 피한 후였다.

「헤헤, 이렇게 단순한 속임수에 넘어갈 정도로 추락했냐！ 적이지만 참 딱하군！」

「그래도 맞으면 즉사다. 방심하지 마！」

이어서 발사되는 슌란의 견제 사격. 《귀신》은 반사적으로 표적을 슌란에게 향하지만, 이미 간격을 확보한 슌란은 그 공격을 손쉽게 피한다. 교대로 《귀신》의 반격을 유도하며 조금씩 동굴로 유도하는 둘. 리스크를 분산하면서 시간 벌기와 유도를 동시에 펼치는 작전이다. 이걸 반복하며 착실히 동굴로 접근한다.

그때, 격전 중에도 명료하게 울려 퍼지는 중저음이 두 사람에게 싸움의 종국이 다가왔음을 알린다.

「소라고둥！ 사유가 준비를 끝냈다！」

동굴 안의 안개는 사라졌으며, 소라고둥의 음색은 사유도 이미 후퇴 준비를 마쳤음을 알려주었다.

「와라…… 《암벽술사》！ 네놈의 무덤으로！」

슌란은 동굴 정면에 버티고 서서 《귀신》의 마지막 일격을 유도한다…… 그러나 《귀신》의 오른팔과 동화한 암석검은 그 자리에서 부서졌다. 《귀신》은 작은 암석방패만 손에 들고 도약해 슌란에게 직접 달려들었다.

「……살려고 발버둥을 치는군！」

그러나 슌란은 끄떡도 않는다. 「변칙엔 변칙으로 맞서라」 어쩐 영문인지 사유가 말했던 말이 그의 뇌리를 스친다. 먼 과거의 기억이 깨어나듯이 자연스럽게 말이다. 슌란은 덤벼드는 《귀신》의 관성을 이용, 호흡을 멈춘 채 《귀신》과 함께 동굴 안으로 굴러 들어간다！

「다우！」

「알았어！」

뒤따라 뛰어든 다우는, 《귀신》과 뒤엉켜 땅에 쓰러진 슌란의 팔을 붙잡음과 동시에 《심》을 쏘았다.

「잘 가라, 목각 인형 자식아. 이걸로 작별이다！」

《심》의 타격력 때문에 슌란에게서 손을 떼고 쓰러지는 《귀신》. 다우는 그 일격이 낳은 반작용 때문에 슌란을 안은 채 외부로 날아간다.

「네놈의 업을 여기서 끊어 주마！」

그리고 슌란은 다우에게 안겨 허공을 날면서 마지막 총탄을 동굴 안으로 발사했다.

불안정한 상태에서 쐈음에도 불구하고 혼신을 실은 탄환은 주인의 마음에 응답이라도 하듯, 동굴 안에 서 있는 《귀신》의 머리를 겨냥해 빨려 들어간다.

차가운 바람을 가르는 총탄, 땅에 나뒹구는 슌란. 바위방패를 틀어쥔 《귀신》, 사방으로 튀는 불꽃…… 그리고 찰나에 주위를 뒤덮는 태양과도 같은 섬광.

슌란이 쏜 탄환이 맹렬한 불덩이로 모습을 바꾸며 《귀신》을 공간째로 집어삼키려 한다.

Chapter 15: The Stone Melder Crumbles
'Sayu, I see Chunlan with the Oni. Looks like this is it.'
This would be the place where the Woodland Wanderers and Matagi would end their fight against the man who terrorized them. Keeping watch outside the dead-end cave they holed up in, Dau could see their companion and sworn enemy approaching at a rapid pace.
It was difficult for him to report to Sayu. Though he stopped bleeding, the wound in his side was painful enough to render him immobile. Still, Dau felt such pain was nothing compared to the opportunity to finally sever the chains of torment and nightmares this man had inflicted upon his people.
'Sorry, Dau. I underestimated how tough this would be.' Sayu's response was uncharacteristically bitter. She was examining the bolts she had pierced into the walls of the cave, pulling some out when unsatisfied with their placement and adding them elsewhere.
As she hopped here and there throught the mist while clutching the Blade of the Thundering Skies, there was a quiet determination in her eyes, and despite the frigid weather, a cold sweat dripped down her face from nerves.
'What's wrong? I've never heard you doubt yourself like this. Buuut if you got troubles, it's my job to share the burden with you.' From where Dau stood above the cave, he couldn't see her expression, nor did he know exactly what she was attempting to do from the inside. Yet he knew her voice well—as much as he believed unwaveringly that against all her anxiety, whatever the problem, they would overcome as a team.
'It's the artifact. It's taking longer than I thought to figure out,' responded Sayu. 'I think being half inside Raiju changed it somehow—like it's been augmented to better suit its lightning attacks.'
'I barely understand a word of that, but if you're struggling with it, it's not a complete loss, is it? Like, your estimation on what it doesn isn't that far off?'
'It's not. So long as I have enough time, I should be able to make this work.' Sayu pushed herself to move faster as she used the bolts and the artifact to adjust the amount of mist and electricity in the cave. She could not afford to slow her hands, slick with condensation they now were, as even just a hair more impatience would risk harming her accuracy.
'I'll go meet with Chunlan to buy some more time, then,' Dau said. 'Then we'll jam that Oni into this hole as soon as you're good to go!'
Leaping from the top of the cave, he waved and readied to take off toward Chunlan, who was already within enough range to hear him call out.
'Dau! Not with that wound!' Sayu cried.
'The bleeding's stopped, so I can handle another fight! I'll do whatever it takes to help you fulfill your goals, Sayu—it's what I live for!' Dau made a playful slapping of his bicep. Sayu was aware of how much control one required of their muscles to master Shin, but she knew he was only trying to reassure her. The only reason he could still run now was due to him flexing his core to reduce bleeding and prevent the wound from widening. They had no time to dress it with herbs and bandages.
'Plus, I'll have Chunlan with me! Your plan'll work, so no more doubting and just do what you gotta do to see this through!'
Chunlan and the Oni had noticed Dau by this point, causing him to accelerate the burden on his body to enter the fray sooner. No matter how Sayu protested, he was going to fight.
'Darn it, Dau... I wish your body could keep up with all the crap you put it through!'
He was right, of couse. Though she grumbled with worry and irritation, she had to trust her own thinking and focus on her end of the plan. Her cousin had always been there to protect her; she knew well she could leave her safety to him.
'Are you sure you're okay to move around?!' Chunlan shouted to Dau, alarm apparent in his voice.
'Right back at you! But whether we're good or not, we gotta keep throwing down!'
Chunlan understand that to mean Sayu still needed more time—that and Dau's arrival was proof enough. After glancing over to the fog-filled cave, the Matagi knew what he needed to do.
'Ahh... A little mouse,' the Oni said flatly, eyes now devoid of any emotion. 'Good—I'll kill you, too. I'll crush everything. Everything!'
His tattoos reflected his bloodlust and rage through a reddish-black shade as they pulsed from his skin.
'Well, aren't we looking extra demonic?' Dau quipped. 'About time you started embracing the name we gave you!'
'He's completely lost it!' Chunlan said. There's no telling what's going to do, so watch yourself!'
'Doesn't that just mean he'll fall for traps even easier?'
'I sure hope so.'
As the Oni formed a massive stone blade over his arm, neither could tell if the roar elicted came from his voice or if the burst of color from his tattoos produced an audible shudder from the very air. The blade was a third of his arm and perforated the skin, its jagged, uneven surface seeming to shriek with the wind upon every wild swing. An instant after the two young men threw themselves to the side to avoid being struck, a large tree behind them seemed to explode as though it were hit by lightning.
Dau couldn't believe his eyes. 'What IS this?! Has he been hiding this kind of power the whole time?!'
'I'd wager he didn't use it because of the strain it puts on his body—but I don't think we can afford to just sit here and wait for him to self-destruct!'
The Oni was being driven by bloodlust, and only bloodlust, by this point. Though the light had faded from his eyes, his body was being pushed to new, limitless heights by the madness burning within. Chunlan could feel it was the kind of rage that would not stop until everything around him and beyind was reduced to ash.
'Even if we could, I don't have that kinda patience. Let's just beat the hell out of him, Chunlan! Right here, right now!'
'Way ahead of you!' As if to signal to start of the official battle, Chunlan fired off a shot at the flesh where the Oni's right hand melded into the weapon—a useless act, as it had been blocked by a stone wall now formed around his left hand. 'Guess we'll still have to deal with those damn shields.'
'Still on point with the most annoying things even when he's lost his marbles!'
'Well, if we can't sneak in with little hits, we'll just have to use his big swings against him.'
'On it!'
It appeared the stone merging into his flesh was beginning to restrict the Oni's breathing, but through blood-soaked swings he continued to fight with his blade.
'Get down!'
His next strike was horizontal. Both felt their hair being tugged by the chaotic winds as the edge passed over their heads. Dau then took this moment as a chance to counter. 'Your stomach's wide open! Time for some payback!'
'No, Dau! Not yet!'
But Dau persisted before Chunlan's shout could stop him. He transformed all his pain into anger, unleashing it all into a single attack at his foe's exposed torso.
'And another!' The first blow was immediately followed by a roundhouse kick at the Oni's leg—-however, the one sent flying this time was not the demon, but Dau. Even after throwing all his weight into the sweep, the Oni still had more than enough power to launch small but tremendous counterattacks with his left hand.
'C-C'mon!' Dau sputtered between coughs after landing. 'You're telling me he's just as fast on his feet even when he's out of control?!'
'If he can still block bullets, of course he can counter a kick!' Chunlan spat with exasperation. 'When I said use his big swings against him, I meant we should control where he goes. Look.'
The ground at the Oni's feet appeared as though a deep footprint shape had been dug out of it. He was swinging massive amounts of rock much heavier than himself with unfathomable, unmanageable power, and with each swing, he was naturally spun 'round by its momentum,
Their enemy followed with a third attack. Chunlan jumped in the opposite direction of Dau and toward the cave where Sayu was waiting. The fog was getting progressively thinner. 'We've bought her a good amount of time so far. It can't be much longer!'
'That's right. Doesn't matter how we get him there—this ends the same way!' Dau bounded before the Oni to feign a foolish frontal attack.
'Good of you to line up for the slaughter!' howled the Oni as he lashed his blade downward, cutting nothing as Dau dropped the feint and jumped nimbly away.
'Haha! Can't believe you'd fall for something so obvious! I hate your guts, but I might start feelin' bad if this keeps up!'
'Don't get cocky! If you eat one of those, you're done, so no messing around!'
Chunlan's warning was followed by several shots to seal the Oni's movements. The Oni aimed a counter toward Chunlan, but he had calculated the time between the attacks and dodged with ease. The Matagi and Woodland Wanderer continued their pattern of baiting, attacking, and dodging counters, baiting, attacking, and dodging counters again, with each heavy swing bringing their target closer to the cave.
They repeated it until they heard a clear, bass sound that signaled them that Sayu had exited the cave and the end of the battle was near.
'That's the conch! Sayu's ready!' Chunlan noticed that the fog completely cleared from the cave. 'Come on, Stone Melder! Into your grave you go!'
Standing prominently with arms spread at the mouth of the cave, he taunted one last attack out of the demon. Instead of swinging again, the Oni let the blade crumble and leaped for his prey using the rocky shield on his left arm instead.
'One last push, huh?' Chunlan muttered under his breath. Yet he did not flinch in the face of this direct assault. At that moment, words from Sayu through the vagabond flashed across his mind:
'Hit the unexpected with the unexpected.'
So Chunlan did just that. Rather than counter the Oni's barreling strike, Chunlan stood still, took a deep breath, and rolled backward into the cave. 'Dau!'
'Got it!' Dau dove behind them and, after grabbing Chunlan's arm as he lay entangled in the Oni's grip on the ground, unleashed Shin. 'See ya, Rocks-for-Brains! It's the end of the line for you!'
The Oni doubled over and fell, releasing his grip just as Dau used the momentum of the attack to pull himself and Chunlan safely back out of the cave.
'Your rampage ends here!'
Still sailing through the air with Dau, Chunlan aimed one last shot into the cave and fired. It seemed to course through the air with the will of the man who fired it, flying unerringly within the cave toward the Oni's head, a brisk whistle following its path. The Oni raised his tone shield to block it—and right then, sparks engulfed in a flash of light as bright as the sun.
That lone shot had become a fireball that consumed all that dwelled within the cave, taking the Oni along with it.

第15回　《岩壁使い》、墜つ
「サユ、シュンランの奴が見えたぜ。《鬼》もだ。
ここが正念場ってやつだな」
シュンランと、《森の遊人》兄妹が定めた《鬼》と決着をつける場。その一本道となった洞窟の上に登り山側を監視していたダウが、その視界に信じていた仲間と、今日この場で忌まわしい縁を切るべき宿敵の姿を視界に収めた。
ダウは、止血こそすれど未だ彼の身体を縛る脇腹の痛みにも関わらず、昂(たかぶ)って妹に呼びかけた。遂にこの時が……これまでに自分が、同胞達があの男に負わされてきた傷と悪夢の連鎖を断ち切れるのであれば、今この瞬間の痛みなど矮小なものだ。「ごめんダウ兄…………甘く見てたみたい……」
しかし当のサユは、彼女に似合わず苦々しく答えた。洞窟内の壁面に突き立てられた矢を一本一本吟味し、時に引き抜き、時に追加で打ち込む。《震天の雷剣》を抱えて霧の中を駆け回るサユは、静かなる双眸(そうぼう)の下に、しかし冷や汗を浮かべていた。「どうしたサユ、お前らしくねぇぞ。
何があった、一緒に背負うのも、おれの役目だぜ」
屋根の上のダウにはサユの表情は見えない。彼女の作業の意味するところも判らない。それでもダウは、彼女の訴える不安は、自分達なら乗り越えられるものという確信を疑わない。　「《震天の雷剣》……思ったよりも“分解”に手間がかかる。
性質そのものは予想通りのみたいだけど……
《雷獣》に長らく使われてたせいで少し変質してる。
出力調整が《雷獣》の雷撃に最適化されてるっぽい」
「なるほど、理屈も判らん。
サユの予想そのものが違ってた訳じゃないんだな？」
　　　「それはそう……だから時間さえあれば、一応は……」
サユはそう言いながらも、矢と古代遺物を通じ、霧と放電を操る手を早める。焦り、それが正確性を奪うと分かっていても、彼女は脂汗の滲む手を緩める事が出来ない。
　　「なら話は早ぇ、おれがシュンランに合流して時間を稼ぐ。　
んで、ヤツを穴ん中に押し込む、それだけよ！」
ダウは洞窟の屋根から飛び降り、既に声の届く距離まで駆け降りて来ていたシュンランに手を振りながら走り出した。
　　「ダウ兄、そのケガでは……！」
　　　「血は止めた、あと一戦くらいなら踏ん張れらぁ！
　サユの夢のために無茶をする、それがおれの生き様よ！」　
ダウは力こぶを叩いて見せる。サユとしては彼が《シン》修行のお陰で筋肉の操作に卓越している事など今更だが、彼なりに負傷への不安を拭ったつもりなのだろう。事実、彼が未だに走れるのも、包帯や薬草よりも先に体幹筋を引き締め、出血と裂け目の拡大を抑えた賜物だった。
　　「それに今回はシュンランだっている！
お前はちゃんと予想も策も当ててんだ、へこむ事ぁねぇ！　
お前らしく最後までやるんだ、慌てず急いで正確にな！」　
自身の存在に気づいたシュンランと《鬼》に向かい、手負いにも関わらず加速するダウ。何を言われようと彼は戦うだろう。「ダウ兄……全く……無茶をカバーする身にもなって欲しい」
　サユはぼやきつつも、その手を緩める事はしなかった。しっかりと自分の知恵を信じて正確に――ダウの言う通りに。
ダウはいつも無茶をする。しかし、こうして今でも共に居る。だからサユは、彼に自身を委ねられる、自らの進むべき道を見続けられるのだ。
　　　「ダウ、動いて大丈夫なのか！？」
　　「そいつはお互い様だぜ、シュンラン！
どうやらもう一戦やる必要がありそうなんでな！」
　　「……やはりか」
ダウの出迎えは、シュンランの悪い予感が当たっている事を裏付けるものであった。二人で合流してまで再び《鬼》との戦いに備える、そして洞窟内の霧。シュンランにとっては、為すべき事を理解するに十分であった。
　　「山猿も……丁度いい、殺す……まとめて殺し尽くす……
オレは……全て壊す……何もかも……！」
シュンランの背後に迫る《鬼》は、最早虚ろな目には何も浮かべていない。代わりに彼の全身で脈動し、その肉体を駆り立てる刺青(いれずみ)から、その殺意と闘争心が赤黒いオーラとなって可視化され、噴出していた。
　　　「おいおい、奴さん随分とそれっぽい面構えになりやがって。
まさしく“鬼”って感じだ、渾名を気に入ったのか？」
　　「奴は完全に正気を失いやがった！
タガが外れてるかもしれない、気をつけろ！」
「ならその分、罠にかけやすかったりしねぇか！？」
　　「そうだと良いんだがな！」
《鬼》は最早声帯から発しているのか、全身の刺青が空気を振動させているのかも定かではない咆哮と共に自らの右腕に巨大な岩石剣を形成し始める。身の丈の三倍はあるそれは、明らかに彼自身の肉体にも食い込み、蝕んでいた。
シュンランとダウに向け振り下ろされる岩石剣の表面の凹凸が生む異様な風切り音。次の瞬間には左右に飛び退いた二人の近くにあった大木が、落雷を受けたかの如く爆散していた。　「何て馬鹿力だ！　こんなのを隠してやがったのか！？」
　　「封じていたほどの負荷なんだろうな……
とはいえ、自滅も期待できそうにはないが……！」
　《鬼》を突き動かす闘争心と殺意……彼の瞳から生気が失せようとも、それは依然として燃え盛り、肉体を駆り続ける。全てを滅ぼし尽くすまで止まらぬほどの熱量だ。限界を超えた限界がいつ訪れるか知る由などない。
　　「ああ、それにおれは気が短ぇ、自滅なんざ待つ気はねぇ！　
やるぜシュンラン、今ここで！」
　　「言われずとも！」
シュンランは嚆矢(こうし)とばかりに、《鬼》の右腕の付け根に向け猟銃を撃ち放つ。しかし、その弾丸は《鬼》が左手で形成した防壁に阻まれ、岩石剣を無力化する事は能わなかった。
　　　「岩壁の守りは変わらずか……！」
　　「フン、変なとこだけは律儀な野郎じゃねぇか……！」
「かくなる上は、奴の大振りっぷり利用するぞ！」
　　　「合点だい！」
《鬼》は、その呼吸すらも刻印に制御されているかのようだ。それでも、再び血に染まった腕ごと岩石剣を振りかぶる。
　　「伏せろッ！」
二撃目は横薙ぎであった。頭上で掻き乱された歪(いびつ)な気流が、二人の頭皮を不快に舐め回す。
　　「脇腹ががら空きだぜ、さっきのお返しだ！」
　　　「待てダウ！　そういう意味じゃ……」
シュンランの制止よりも先に、隙を見せた《鬼》へ突撃するダウ。痛みを怒りに変えた一撃を、《鬼》の脇腹に叩きこむ。「それ、もう一丁！」
　手応えを感じるやダウは、次なる一撃として《鬼》の脛(すね)に回し蹴りを放つ――が、その二撃目は不発に終わった。
宙を無秩序に舞い飛び、身体を地面に打ち付けられる事となったのは《鬼》ではなく、ダウであった。《鬼》はたとえ大振りの攻撃を放った後であろうと、左手で小規模なカウンターを繰り出す程度の余力を保っていたのだ。
　　「うがッ……荒ぶってんのに反撃も変わらずかよ！」
　　「銃撃も防ぐんだぞ……奴の大振りを利用しようってのは、　
誘導にだ。あれを見ろ」
《鬼》の足元には、地面を抉ったかのような不自然な足跡が形成されていた。最早制御できぬ力で自身より遥かに重い巨岩を振るう彼は、その一振りの度に身体を逆に振り回され、意図せずして引きずられていたのだ。
続いて繰り出される《鬼》の三撃目。シュンランはダウとは逆方向に飛び退く。サユの待つ、霧が薄くなりつつある洞窟に向かって。
　　　「時間は既に稼いだ、もう少しで終わるはずだ！」
　　　「なるほど、どの道止めの刺し方は変わらねぇしな！
よし、そうと決まれば話は早え！」
ダウはシュンランの意図を理解するや、早速《鬼》の前に躍り出る。そして、正面から《鬼》に突撃する構えを見せた――かに思えた。
　　「事前に分かってれば！」
《鬼》の岩石剣は虚空を斬る。
　突撃の構えを見せたダウに振り下ろされた《鬼》の四撃目。その切っ先が標的のあるべき空間を捉えた時、ダウは既に飛び退いていた。
　　「ヘヘ、こうも単純なフェイントにかかる程に堕ちたか！
敵ながら哀れなこった！」
　　　「だが喰らえば必死、気は抜くな！」
続いて放たれるシュンランの牽制(けんせい)射撃。《鬼》は反射的に矛先をシュンランに向けるも、間合いを既に確保しているシュンランがそれを躱(かわ)すのは容易かった。
交互に《鬼》の反撃を誘発させ、少しずつ洞窟へ誘導する二人。リスクを分散しつつ、時間稼ぎと誘導を同時にこなす作戦だ。これを幾度も繰り返し、着実に洞窟に近づいていく。
　やがて、激戦の中に在っても明瞭に響き渡る重低音が、二人に戦いの終局が近い事を告げる。
　　　「法螺貝！　サユが仕事を終えた！」
洞窟内の靄(もや)は既に無い、法螺貝の音色は、サユも既に退避済みである事を告げていた。
　　「来い……《岩壁使い》！　貴様の墓穴に！」
シュンランは洞窟の真正面に仁王立ちし、《鬼》の最後の一撃を誘う――が、《鬼》の右腕に同化した岩石剣はその場で崩れ落ちた。《鬼》は小さな岩楯のみを手に跳躍し、シュンランに直接掴みかかったのだ！
　　「……死中に活を！」
しかしシュンランは怯まない。「想定外には想定外をぶつけろ」。サユの言っていた言葉がどういう訳か彼の脳裏に浮かび上がっていた。遠い昔の記憶が呼び覚まされるように自然と。
シュンランは飛びかかる《鬼》の慣性を利用し、呼吸を止めたまま《鬼》諸共洞窟内に転がり込む！
　　「ダウ！」
　　　「応！」
続いて飛び込んだダウは、《鬼》に組み付かれ地に伏せたシュンランの腕を掴み、同時に《シン》を撃ち放った。
　　「あばよ木偶(でく)の坊(ぼう)野郎、これにてお別れだぜ！」
《シン》の打撃力により、シュンランから手を放し倒れ伏す《鬼》。ダウはその一撃が生む反作用を以て、抱えたシュンランと共に外界へと飛び退く。
「貴様の業、ここで絶つ！」
そしてシュンランは、ダウに抱えられ宙を舞いながら最後の銃弾を洞窟の中に撃ち放った。
不安定な状態から放たれたにも関わらず、渾身の弾丸は主の想いに導かれるかの如く、洞穴の中に立ち尽くす《鬼》の頭部を目がけて吸い込まれていく。
冷たい風を裂く銃弾、地に投げ出されるシュンラン、岩盾を構える《鬼》、散る火花――そして刹那、辺り一面を覆い尽くす太陽の如き閃光。
シュンランの放った弾丸が猛烈なる火球に姿を変え、《鬼》を空間ごと呑み込まんとしていた。
