【특보】 맥도웰 의장의 담화

개전 전날인 8월 31일── 본지는 맥도웰 의장님의 담화를 취재할 기회를 얻었다. 짧은 시간 동안 들려주신 크로스벨 시민에게 보내는 메시지를 여기에 게재한다.

「약 1년 반 전인 1월 14일, 70여 년에 걸친 크로스벨의 역사가 막을 내렸다. 아무리 이 땅을 사랑한다 해도 자신의 힘으로 고향을 지켜낼 수는 없었다…… 그 이후의 나날을 모두가 어떤 마음으로 지내 왔는지, 아무리 무력한 나라도 상상하기 어렵지 않다.

막다른 골목에 들어선 우리가 올바른 길을 찾아 나아가려 하면 할수록 험난함과 고통이 따라왔다. 어디까지 계속될지 알 수 없는, 종점이 보이지 않는 여로는 앞을 응시하는 눈을 감기고 걸음을 멈추게끔 할 것이다.

허나 잊지 않았으면 한다. 우리 곁에 누가 있었는지를. 우리를 위해 계속 싸우고 있는 자들이 지금도 있다는 것을. 그 존재를 가슴에 품고, 격동을 극복하는 힘으로 삼았으면 한다. 크로스벨이 나아가야 할 길을 계속해서 함께 마음에 그려주었으면 한다…… 그것이 단 하나의, 나의 유일한 바람이다」

의장의 담화는 이상이다. 또 연락 사항으로서, 오늘 이후 동부의 탱그램 요새 방면은 접근이 금지되었다. 각자 주의하길 바란다.

【행사】 아르크 앙 시엘, 별과 함께 부활！？

지난 8월 30일, 거의 휴무 상태였던 《아르크 앙 시엘》에 오랜만에 스포트라이트가 켜졌다. 개전 직전의 사기를 높이기 위해 갑작스럽게 한정 공연이 결정된 것이다.

◆차세대 무희의 깜짝 출연도◆

간판 여배우 두 명이 부득이하게 물러난 가운데, 스테이지에 등장한 건 차세대 유망주, “별의 공주”──쉴리 어트레이드. 함께 등장한 은발의 여성 댄서와 화려한 댄스를 선보였다.

그 뒤 소식을 알 수 없었던 제도 가극장의 톱스타── 비타 클로틸드가 등장하는 깜짝 출연이 이어지면서 회장이 거대한 환호성에 휩싸인 것은 말할 나위도 없다.

객석에는 특별 우대 티켓을 받은 수많은 군 관계자들의 모습이 보였으나, 맥도웰 의장의 주선으로 가두에 모니터 차가 마련되어 시민들도 잠시 동안의 즐거움을 느낄 수 있었다.

【사건】 제국 본토에서 이변 발생

《아르크 앙 시엘》의 공연으로 크로스벨이 떠들썩한 한편, 제국 본토에서는 각지의 하늘에 5개의 “말뚝”이, 제도 상공에는 거대한 부유 건축물이 나타나는 이변이 발생했다. 정부 발표에 따르면, 후자는 《환상 기동 요새》라는 대 공화국전의 최종병기로 미지의 “말뚝” 역시 그와 관련된 것이라고 한다.

우리가 “제국인”이 된 그 겨울── 당시 발행한 크로스벨 타임즈의 호외를 지금 다시 읽고 있다. 고향의 미래를 상상할 힘은 아직 우리에게 남아 있을까.

그 물음에 나는 「그렇다」고 답할 수 있다. 허세를 부리려는 것도, 허풍을 떨고자 하는 것도 아니다. 다만 그렇게 믿을 수 있다. 같은 대답을 할 청년들을 나는 알고 있기 때문이다.

계속해서 생각하는 것을 포기해서는 안 된다. 맞고 쓰러지더라도 다시 일어나자. 몇 번이고…… 몇 번이고.

[Special Feature] Comment from Speaker MacDowell
We had the unique opportunity to briefly interview Speaker MacDowell on August 31, the day before the start of the war. Addressing the residents of Crossbell, he had the following to say:
'About a year and a half ago, on January 14, seventy years of Crossbell history as an independent country came to and end. We were not able to prevent that, despite the love we harbor for our homeland. Powerless as I may be, even I can imagine the complex, rueful sentiment my fellow Crossbell citizens have lived with since that fateful day. We've found ourselves at a dead end, and the more we look for a way out, the more hopeless it seems. No doubt many of us are exhausted from treading this seemingly endless path of harship. But we must not forget about those who stood strong when we could not--those who continue to fight for our cause. They are still out there. We can yet find the strength to overcome the barriers that rebuff us and think together about what future we want for Crossbell.'
On the subject of Crossbell, starting today, access to Tangram Fortress and the surrounding area is restricted.

[Events] The Stars of Arc en Ciel Shine Again!
Arc en Ciel's long hiatus came to and end on, August 30 when the troupe staged an exclusive rehearsal performance, boosting morale on the eve of all-out war.

◆Dazzling Dancer & Stage Surprises◆
In the absence of two members from the troupe's main ensemble, a new star rose in their place--쉴리 아트레이드, who debuted as the Starlight Princess only two years ago, dazzled the audience last night with her beautiful dancing. Heimdallr Opera House's top performer, the formerly-missing 비타 클로틸드, also made a surprise appearance. Captivated by these two stellar performers, the audience erupted in thunderous applause.
Most of the seats were occupied by military personnel who received free tickets to the show, but it was also broadcast live on truck-mounted monitors throughout the city's streets, courtesy of Speaker MacDowell, so everyone could enjoy it.

[Incident] Bizarre Phenomenon in Erebonia
While the air was rife with positive energy in Crossbell thanks to the Arc en Ciel show, a disconcerting phenomenon occurred in Erebonia. Five giant spires appeared all over the country, along with a massive floating structure in the skies above Heimdallr.
The government announced the latter of these objects to be the Empyreal Fortress, the ultimate weapon to be used against the Republic of Calvard, while the spires seem connected to it in some way.

[From the Editor] Till Our Flag Flies Again
Looking at an old issue of the Crossbell Times, I let my thoughts drift back to the wintry day when we became Imperial subjects. Do we still have the strength to imagine a different future for Crossbell? If someone were to ask me, I'd answer 'yes' without skipping a beat--not because I'm putting on a strong front, or getting lose in some pipe dream, but because I know many others who share that same belief. We will always hold the spirit of Crossbell in our hearts. One day, we will proudly fly our flag again.

【特報】マクダエル議長の談話
開戦前日となる８月３１日──本誌は、マクダエル議長より
談話をとる機会に恵まれた。僅かな時間に語られたクロスベル
市民へのメッセージを、ここに掲載する。

「およそ１年半前の１月１４日、７０余年に渡るクロスベルの
歴史が幕を閉じた。どれだけこの地を愛していようと、己の力
で故郷を守りきることはできなかった。……あれからの日々を
皆がどのような想いで過ごしてきたか、たとえ無力な私であっ
ても想像に難くない。
袋小路に入ってしまった我々が、正しき道を見出し進もうと
すればするほど、険しさや苦しみはより伴ってくる。どこまで
続くか分からない終点の見えない道のりは、前を見据える目を
閉じさせ歩みを止めようとしてくるだろう。
だが忘れないでほしい。我々の傍にはこれまで誰がいたかを。
我々のために戦い続けている者たちが、今もいることを。その
存在を胸に抱いて、激動を乗り越える力としてほしい。これか
らのクロスベルがどうあるべきか、共に思い描き続けてほしい
のだ。……それがたった１つの、私の唯一の望みだ」

議長の談話は以上だ。また連絡事項として、本日以降は東部
のタングラム要塞方面への接近は禁止されている。各々ご注意
頂きたい。

【催事】アルカンシェル、星とともに復活！？
去る８月３０日、ほぼ休演状態となっていた《アルカンシェ
ル》に、久方ぶりにスポットライトが灯った。開戦直前の士気
を高めるべく、急遽限定公演が決まったのだ。

◆次代の舞姫サプライズも◆
看板女優２人が降板を余儀なくされている中、ステージに現
れたのは、次代を担う“星の姫”──シュリ・アトレイド。共
に登場した銀髪の女性ダンサーと、華麗なダンスを披露した。
その後は、消息不明とされていた帝都歌劇場のトップスター
──ヴィータ・クロチルダが登場するサプライズもあり、会場
が大歓声に包まれたのは言うまでもない。
客席には特別優待チケットを受け取った多くの軍関係者の姿
が見られたが、マクダエル議長の計らいで街頭にはモニター車
が手配。市民たちも暫しの歓楽を得ることができた。

【事件】帝国本土で異変発生
《アルカンシェル》の公演がクロスベルを賑わせた一方──
帝国本土では各地の空に５本の“杭”が、帝都上空には巨大な
浮遊建築物が顕れる異変が発生した。
政府の発表によれば、後者は《幻想機動要塞》という対共和
国戦の最終兵器で、謎の“杭”もそれに連なるものとのことだ。

【編集後記】旗を掲げるその日まで
私たちが“帝国人”となったあの冬──当時発行したクロス
ベルタイムズの号外を、今読み返している。故郷の未来を想像
する力は、まだ自分たちに残っているだろうか。
その問いに、私は「はい」と答えられる。見栄を張りたいわ
けでも、絵空事を並べたいわけでもない。ただ、そう信じられ
る。同じ答えを抱く若者たちを、私は知っているから。
考え続けることを、諦めてはいけない。打ちのめされたって、
また立ち上がろう。何度も……何度でも。
