Rean Schwarzer (リィン・シュバルツァー) is the main protagonist of 영웅전설 섬의 궤적 I, II, III, and IV as a member, and later instructor, of Thors Military Academy's Class VII. He is also one of the three main protagonists of 영웅전설 시작의 궤적 and 영웅전설 계의 궤적.

영웅전설 섬의 궤적

A good-natured young man, Rean is starting a new chapter of his life at Thors Military Academy. Although often broadsided by the strangeness of the school's student body, he takes it all in stride, proving a trustworthy friend and ally to his classmates. Trained in the Eastern Eight Leaves One Blade style of swordsmanship, Rean performs his techniques with a saber-like sword called a tachi.

A first-year student at Thors Military Academy and Awakener of Valimar. One month after the events in Trista, Rean awakens in the snowy Eisengard Range plagued with worry over the fate of his classmates. Not one to quit even when the odds are against him, however, Rean immediately resolves to reunite with those he parted from–be they friend or a certain newly-unveiled foe–together with the help of two very unexpected sources: a talking cat named Celine and a Divine Knight named Valimar.

영웅전설 섬의 궤적 III

A young man who was once part of Thors Military Academy's original Class VII. More famously known as the "Ashen Chevalier," he is the awakener of the Ashen Knight, Valimar. He fought as part of a third faction in the civil war. Afterward, he assisted the Imperial Army with the annexation of Crossbell and North Ambria, cementing his heroic status and making him famous across the empire. After he graduated from Thors, the government invited him to join the military, but he refused for fear they would abuse Valimar's power. In order to continue upholding the spirit of Thors, he applied to be an instructor at its newly-opened branch campus.

A young man who was born the son of Chancellor Osborne before a grim chain of events led to his adoption into the Schwarzer family. He is a practitioner of the Eight Leaves One Blade style, and harbors a mysterious power within him. Following the end of the Erebonian Civil War, he was hailed as a hero throughout the Empire and became known as the "Ashen Chevalier," pilot of Valimar, the Ashen Knight. After graduating from Thors' Military Academy, he joined Thors' branch campus as an instructor, where he guided his pupils through their many trials together. While leading both new and old Class VII to fend off the crisis that faced Erebonia, he fell prey to the masterminds' schemes, resulting in him losing control over his power and triggering the end of the world. He is currently a captive, his whereabouts unknown.

The son of Ymir's House Schwarzer. His many accomplishments range from inheriting the Seventh Form of the Eight Leaves One Blade style to being known far and wide as the Ashen Chevalier, but perhaps his greatest pride is that of being Class VII's homeroom instructor at Thors Military Academy's branch campus. His battle against the curse threatening to undermine the Empire, the Great Twilight, was so intense that even he lost himself for a time. It was through the tireless aid of new and old Class VII, his many comrades, and the Divine Knight Valimar that he was able to pull through and free the land of the ultimate evil at last. Upon the Great Twilight's end, Rean threw himself back into his work at the branch campus. Yet the request of a certain individual has inspired him to take a trip back to his hometown...

A young man who works as an instructor at Thors Military Academy in Erebonia. Though once at the mercy of the Empire's momentous fate, he managed to overcome it with the help of his many friends and allies. He has also mastered the 'Eight Leaves One Blade,' a confluence of Eastern swordsmanship styles, and currently holds the title 'Divine Blade of Ash.' Recently, Rean and several fellow Class VII alumni were invited to the former enemy nation of Calvard to participate in a certain project. Around the same time, however, he also received a letter from his master, Yun Ka-fai...

Appearance

Rean is a young man with unkempt dark hair, usually with a blue tint, and fuchsia eyes. During his time at Thors, Rean wears the red Class VII uniform, using black trousers and a lavender tie. Rean's traveling clothes consist of a black shirt over a white vest, a large red jacket with a fleece lined collar, blue trousers with a stripe pattern across one leg and leather laced-up boots.

An older Rean wears a long white overcoat with belt-like attachments on the shoulders, a flared collar and a loosely worn purple belt. He also wears a black zipped shirt over a white buttoned shirt, black trousers and a red suspender belt for carrying his tachi.

Rean can enter an enhanced state which alters his appearance due to the influence of his position as the ultimate Sacrifice of the Erebonian Curse. In this form, his eyes glow red and his hair becomes a stark shade of white. After the Great Twilight, Rean is permanently in this state. He then wears a special mana regulating outfit crafted by the Hexen Clan which is comprised of an all black top and trousers with several zippers incorporated into its design. This in turn made Rean resemble Loewe who also has a similar appearance as noted by Renne.

Rean uses a tachi in battle. It is kept in a sheath which transitions from purple at one end to dark blue and a metal clasp at the other. The blade itself is single edged, with a decorated purple and gold woven handle and two tassels hanging from the end. There is a ring-like attachment on the side of the guard.

Personality

Kind, sociable, easygoing and modest to a fault, Rean is about as upright as they come. He is incredibly supportive, often helping people (friends or otherwise) with their various problems, sometimes going through extreme lengths to fulfill requests. He is a natural-born leader, often taking the initiative when the group faces a problem, relying on his good instincts and deductive reasoning skills to get through them.

However, despite putting on a confident front, Rean has a shockingly low amount of self-worth, often being harsh to himself and trying to spread credit to others mainly due to the fact he was adoptive and how other noble mistreat his adoptive father over it and how he end up lost control of himself due to his unknown power when he and Elise were younger. He is also unable to reconcile the love that his family has for him, often considering himself to be a burden, striving to one day "pay back his parents" for caring for them, unable to realize that his parents unconditionally love him.

He also has a tendency to put others over himself, often to his detriment. Jusis points out that his tendency to do this comes across as more abnormal than virtuous. He holds himself back when fighting due to the fear of losing control and accidentally hurting someone with his power. He is able to slowly reconcile his shortcomings over the course of Cold Steel I & II, eventually learning to accept the love that people have for him and accept his unknown power as an extension of himself. He is quite overprotective of Elise, stating that he won't just let any man be with her and easily snaps to even the slightest of infractions (such as a simple stroke) against her.

Rean matures a great deal after the events of the first two Cold Steel games. Although his base personality is more or less the same, it's greatly tempered by his experiences in the military. He gains a greater understanding of the people and world around him, and makes a point to look at things "beneath the surface." He is more forthright than he used to be, and he tends to vocalize uncomfortable truths rather than coddle them (such as when he tells Kurt his sword skills and lack of resolve aren't enough to help him on his mission).

As a teacher, his kindness and easygoing nature are complemented by high expectations and a desire to maximize each of his student's potential. He is also fiercely protective of them, and while it often manifests in a desire to help them overcome whatever obstacle that might be in their way, his overprotectiveness of them can lead him to make questionable decisions in order to secure their safety. Over the course of Cold Steel III, he learns to set aside his overprotectiveness towards them and genuinely trust his students as comrades. He shows a great deal of concern for students outside of his class as well and is always willing to lend an ear to any student in need.

Rean is surprisingly competitive, often putting his all into winning competitions. He admonishes Group B for their abysmal grade in their previous field study and spurs them into cooperating by appealing to their sense of pride. He will express dismay when losing to his opponent during minigames. He also strongly believes in diligence, and while he's always willing to help his students in need, he also expects his students to work hard in order to achieve their goals.

Rean has a fondness for fishing and enjoys snowboarding; he even helped construct Ymir's snowboarding course as a child. The Unspeakable R costume sets in Cold Steel II & III make it clear that Rean was quite imaginative as a child.

Trivia

• "Schwarzer" is a German surname meaning "black one" or "dark one". It thus has the same root as Julia Schwarz's surname.
  • "Schwarzer" would be pronounced "SHVAR-zer" in German, but the game dub usually pronounces it as shoo-OR-zer.
• Rean is known to be extremely protective of his sister; in fact, the first time Rean's ogre power is used in-game is when he believes Elise is endangered in the Old Schoolhouse. He became known as the Impregnable Brother (鉄壁の兄) in the Hyarms family for blocking Patrick T. Hyarms's advances on Elise.
  • 영웅전설 섬의 궤적 IV, if Elise's bond event isn't maxed out, during Eventide, Rean will give Patrick his blessing and allow Patrick to confess his feelings to her.
• In 영웅전설 섬의 궤적, with the exception of 2 dishes, he is only capable of creating dishes that are "average".
• As of 영웅전설 섬의 궤적 II, his cooking ability is much more in line with the other party members.
• 영웅전설 섬의 궤적 III is the only game in the Erebonia arc in which Rean personally is never fought throughout the course of the main story.
  • He is fought alongside Machias Regnitz by Laura S. Arseid and Fie Claussell in 영웅전설 섬의 궤적.
