“Awaken, Testa-Rossa!”
— Cedric Reise Arnor, summoning Testa-Rossa

Testa-Rossa, the Vermillion Knight (《(あか)騎神(きしん)》テスタ=ロッサ), known in legends as "a crimson demon said to wield a thousand weapons", is one of the seven Divine Knights of Erebonia.

Background

It was found in the depths below the Imperial capital Heimdallr, where it was sealed away after the capital was recaptured by the Imperial Family in the fifth Century.

Testa-Rossa possesses the 'Thousand Weapons' system which enables it to summon a large variety of weapons capable of handling any situation.

Testa-Rossa made its first appearance in the series shortly after the Azure Tree emerged in Crossbell, it was then that Duke Cayenne took Prince Cedric to its resting place beneath Valflame Palace where the Prince resonated with the sealed Divine Knight.

After Class VII successfully rescued Emperor Eugent, Empress Priscilla, Elise Schwarzer and Carl Regnitz from their imprisonment in the Karel Imperial Villa, Duke Cayenne summoned the Infernal Castle where he had Prince Cedric held so that he could use him to awaken the Vermillion Apocalypse once more.

Unfortunately right after Crow Armbrust piloting Ordine was defeated by Rean Schwarzer piloting Valimar, Duke Cayenne was able to use the opportunity to force Prince Cedric into Testa-Rossa despite the warnings of the others. It was finally defeated when Rean and Crow teamed up to defeat the Vermillion Apocalypse before it could consume everyone in Heimdallr.

Testa-Rossa first appears when Cedric summons him during a conflict with Class VII in the Osgiliath Basin north of Alster in Lamare. However, he was briefly defeated when Juna, Ash and Kurt (piloting his newly returned Soldat) defeated him in battle and was forced to withdraw from the scene when the Pantagruel alongside members of the Old Class VII intervened.

Vermillion Apocalypse

The Vermillion Apocalypse (紅き終焉の魔王(エンド・オブ・ヴァーミリオン)), also known as the Crimson Calamity (真紅(しんく)災厄(せいやく)), is a transformation of Testa-Rossa as the result of being contaminated by Zoro-Agruga's cursed blood. The Vermillion Apocalypse uses Testa-Rossa as its core. Upon its awakening in the Infernal Castle, it absorbed the mana from the people below in Heimdallr and was fought and defeated by Class VII.

Trivia

  • Testarossa is the name of the holy sword central to the plot of Falcom's 1990 game Dinosaur and its later remake.
  • It is named after the Italian sport car Ferrari Testarossa.
  • Randy Orlando's ultimate, Zemurian Ore-made weapon from 영웅전설 제로의 궤적 as well as Shirley Orlando's blade rifle in 영웅전설 벽의 궤적 are named after the "demon from Erebonian folklore".[2]
  • The Sen no Kiseki The Artbook lists the Vermillion Apocalypse as the Crimson Lotus Demonic God (紅蓮(ぐれん)魔神(ましん)), a name that is not used in-game.[3]
  • Of all the Divine Knights, Testa-Rossa is the only one with the most known Awakeners with three. They were Emperor Hector I, the False Emperor Orthros and Crown Prince Cedric. In the case of Orthros, it may not be explicitly stated the False Emperor piloted Testa-Rossa himself, however, it can be reasonably assumed either he was selected, if not his heir (the heir who would eventually divert the Cayenne family lineage away from its ducal line). This is because of the Knight's unique Awakener criteria, as "the only ones capable of rousing it from its slumber are descendants of the Arnor bloodline". Additionally, the fact Zector is explicitly stated to the contrary (Lucius helped to guide its Awakener despite not piloting the Divine Knight itself) further suggests the Awakener was Orthros himself. The other Arnor princes can all be ruled out, given that Orthros never forged any long-term alliance with them (as is seen through the Albert-Gunnar and Dreichels-Lucius pairings).
