Rean Schwarzer was born in May S.1186 as the son of military officer Giliath Osborne and his wife Kasia.[1]
During his early childhood, Rean was raised in Heimdallr, where he lived peacefully with his parents. Their peaceful life came to an abrupt end when General Rudolf Arundel and his faction of nobles within the imperial army aggressively assumed a pro-war stance to make a name for themselves.[1] Osborne caught wind of their schemes, but could do little more than warn his fellow officers.[1] Arundel's faction responded by having what resembled a jaeger corps attack their home on the outskirts of Heimdallr.[1] Late at night, they had lit his house on fire.[1] Osborne sped home, and found Rean mortally wounded, penetrated by debris near his heart.[1] Rean's mother, with her dying breath, begged him to make sure at least their son would survive the attack.[1]

Osborne begged to goddess and fiend alike to save his son.[2] Ishmelga responded, stating it had been waiting for those words for two centuries.[2] Osborne sacrificed mind and body to serve as the Awakener of the Ebon Knight. In return, Ishmelga ensured Rean's survival by transplanting Osborne's heart into Rean's body, a possibility enabled by their pact.[1][2]

Fleeing from the scene of the crime, Osborne called his childhood friend Teo Schwarzer; it was the first time they spoke to each other in three years:[3]
I want you to take in a child. You must cut all ties with me and never speak a word of this to that child. I'm sorry, Teo. You're the only one I can turn to.
He informed Teo about the location where he had abandoned Rean.[3] Teo dashed toward the location, realizing how heartbroken Osborne was as a single father.[3] To Rean, he muttered:
Rean... I pray you grow up strong and healthy. ...Oh, Aidios... If you're listening, hear me now. Please, allow this child... [Note 1]
Baron Schwarzer took Rean into his household and raised the boy with his wife Lucia and their three-year-old daughter, Elise. Since Rean had no memory prior to his abandonment, he had no idea whether he was born a noble, commoner, or even an Erebonian to begin with. This sparked some controversy among the baron's fellow nobles and many rumors spread about Rean being his bastard son. Nevertheless, the Schwarzers remained a kind and supportive family throughout Rean's upbringing.
In S.1196, at the age of 9, Rean experienced a traumatic incident.[Supplementary 1][Note 2] As a monster approached his adoptive sister, he was overcome by an overwhelming anger. Some sort of power, referred to as his ogre power,[JP 1] overtook his consciousness and viciously murdered the beast. Rean began to fear himself. Though he was raised in a loving environment, he felt an immense amount of guilt towards his foster family for being a burden.
The following year, in S.1197, Yun Ka-fai takes Rean in as a pupil.[4][5][6][Supplementary 1] Yun Ka-fai taught him the Eight Leaves One Blade school of swordsmanship in the hopes that Rean could eventually overcome his fear and master his power. Unfortunately, Rean was unable to do so and Yun Ka-Fai had to cut his training short, although he granted Rean the title of Beginner.
영웅전설 섬의 궤적
After struggling to find a path to follow in life, Rean decides to enroll at Thors Military Academy in S.1204 in an attempt to distance himself from his foster family and ultimately join the army. He is placed in Class VII and is sent to various locations as a part of his field studies. Rean is the only member of the class who does not join a extracurricular club. Instead, he spends most of his time helping out the academy's Student Council with requests from both the academy and nearby Trista.
Despite some initial frictions with some of his classmates, Rean ultimately gets along with all of them. He also gets along well with the prototype Class VII members.
During Class VII's visit to Ymir for a brief respite,[7][8][9][10][Supplementary 1][Note 3] Rean receives an intermediate level scroll through Teo Schwarzer from Yun Ka-fai.[9][Supplementary 1]
On the night of the 127th Thors Military Academy festival, one week before the start of the Erebonian Civil War, Rean and his classmates complete the trial against Loa Erebonius and discover Valimar, the Ashen Knight, in the depths of the Old Schoolhouse.[11][Note 4]
Rean's peaceful life at the academy falls apart on 30 October, S.1204. Class VII is listening to a radio broadcast of Chancellor Osborne's national address geared toward Crossbell's illegitimate declaration of independence and subsequent annihilation of the Garrelia Fortress when the chancellor is sniped by the Imperial Liberation Front's leader C, who had been Rean's senior and classmate Crow Armbrust all along. Shocked over the turn of these events, Class VII witnesses how the Noble Alliance assumes control of Heimdallr through a coup and march on to invade Trista.[12]
Outside the walls of Trista, Class VII fights off the invading Panzer Soldats. They are driven into a corner by Scarlet's Spiegel, and when Rean is about to draw out his ogre power, he hears a disembodied voice asking him "dost thou desire power?". His surroundings fade and he finds himself in a dark room with only the voice, asking him to establish a covenant. From the darkness emerges Celine, who in a human voice explains to Rean that he needs to call out the name he learnt during the trial against Loa Erebonius: Valimar.[12] The power of the Divine Knight is evident when Rean takes control of Valimar and easily overpowers Scarlet.
His victory is short-lived, however, as Crow Armbrust makes his appearance on the battlefield. Crow reveals himself to be the Awakener of Ordine, the Azure Knight. With three years of experience under his belt, Crow pushes Ordine into its second form and effortlessly beat his former classmate. Valimar advises immediate tactical retreat and Celine, Rean's co-pilot, instructs the Divine Knight to move away from the battlefield as far as possible. After the parting words from the person with whom Rean spent his time at the festival's bonfire, Valimar sets course for the Eisengard Range, marking the end of 영웅전설 섬의 궤적.
영웅전설 섬의 궤적 II
Rean's awakening, almost an entire month later, marks the start of 영웅전설 섬의 궤적 II.[6] Upset and agitated, he ignores Celine's remarks and marches his way down the Eisengard mountain range. He is stopped in his tracks by a Magic Knight and, with Valimar having depleted all of his mana, is forced to battle the golem on his own. Before things go awry he is saved by Toval Randonneur, who is joined by Elise and Princess Alfin Reise Arnor.
They escort him back to Ymir, where he reunites with his parents. They inform him about the civil war that has been raging on for a month and Rean is worried about his friends in Class VII. The following day Northern Jaegers, hired by the Kreuzen Province, attack Ymir and gravely wound Teo. Rean, returning from the canyon, reacts to the situation by unleashing his ogre power until he is stopped by Elise. Altina Orion, an agent of the Noble Alliance, successfully kidnaps Rean's sister and the princess. The next day, Rean and Toval set out to find Rean's friends.
With Valimar's access to the Spirit Paths and assistance of Toval, Claire Rieveldt, and Sharon Kreuger, it takes Rean ten days to locate and assemble the entirety of Class VII (minus Crow). Shortly after their reunion the Noble Alliance invades Ymir and invites Rean onboard their flagship, Pantagruel. Their goal to persuade Rean to join their cause backfires when Rean decides to break into the room Alfin was kept in and attempts to escape with her from the Pantagruel. With his ogre power waning, he is stopped on the ship's deck by the Alliance's strongest members. Their checkmate is turned into a stalemate when Prince Olivert Reise Arnor aboard the Courageous flies by. Vita Clotilde decides it's best for both sides to each to their way.[13]
The next day, Prince Olivert entrusts the Courageous to Class VII and the duty of captain is transferred from Victor S. Arseid to Towa Herschel.[14] The original crew, plus Toval, Claire, and Sharon, decides that the Thors students would take care of east Erebonia as they themselves head west. With Rean serving as their leader, the Courageous picks up requests from places throughout east Erebonia and even visit Alster in western Erebonia.[15][16][Supplementary 2][Note 5]
On 30 December S.1204, two months into the civil war, Class VII returns to Trista and liberate it from the nobles' influence. The academy itself is kept by the Order of the Lion, students of noble origin under leadership of Patrick T. Hyarms.[20]
The following morning, all students of Thors prepare themselves for the invasion of Karel Imperial Villa, where Emperor Eugent Reise Arnor III, Empress Priscilla, Heimdallr Governor Carl Regnitz, and Elise are being held. The moment they manage to liberate the imperial family, the Infernal Castle appears where the Valflame Palace was originally situated.[21]
The missing member of the imperial family, Crown Prince Cedric Reise Arnor, is kept on the throne room of the castle. After emerging victorious against Vita Clotilde and Crow Armbrust, Rean summons Valimar for his final duel against the Crow-piloted Ordine. Rean wins the duel and both Crow and Vita prepare to withdraw when Duke Croire de Cayenne, insists to continue their operation and forces Cedric into Testa-Rossa, the Vermillion Knight. Its contact with the imperial family's blood triggers its curse and it transforms into the catastrophic Vermillion Apocalypse. Joining forces, Rean and Crow manages to defeat the calamity, but at a high cost. With its final attack, the Vermillion Apocalypse pierces Crow's chest, fatally wounding him.[21]
In a dazzling turn of events, Noble Alliance chief of staff Rufus Albarea reveals himself to be the primary member of the Ironbloods, after which Osborne reveals himself to be alive. He instructs Rufus to invade Crossbell and takes over Ouroboros's Phantasmal Blaze Plan. Rean rushes toward the chancellor, grabbing his collar and asking why he is still alive.[21]
Rufus places his hand on Rean's shoulder, reminding him that he played an important factor in the decisions he made. Rean had remembered that before being adopted by the Schwarzers, he was dropped off in the snow by a man whose face he could no longer recognize. It was at this moment that it dawned upon him that the father who abandoned him twelve years prior was Giliath Osborne, who confirmed his parentage.[21]
Osborne soon proclaims Rean to be the hero who ended the civil war, and grants him the title of Ashen Chevalier. Rean initially falls into a depressive state due to not being able to uphold his promise to Towa, but is lifted out of it with support from his friends. Ultimately, Rean chooses to serve in the army as an officer despite his initial reservations, but does so since he knows that it will at least allow him to save some lives. He partakes in annexing Crossbell, simply doing his duties as asked.
During his time in Crossbell as a military officer, he ends up working with Altina, and saved Juna Crawford and her siblings from a Republican gunship. He also crosses paths with Lloyd Bannings in the Geofront.
영웅전설 섬의 궤적 III
While all of the members of the rest of Class VII go their own ways, Rean decides to complete his second year and graduate from the academy. During his second year, he develops a close bond with Patrick, who graduates with him. After graduating and during his second year, despite rejecting offers to join the Imperial Army of Erebonia, he still accepts orders from the Imperial government due to his altruistic nature, often working alongside Altina.
During these orders, Rean notices that his ogre power becomes gradually stronger. He participated in the Northern War; when Ouroboros unleashed a swarm of archaisms, Rean lost control of his power when he unleashed it in a desperate (yet successful) effort to keep the archaisms from harming any civilians. After this incident, Rean decided no longer to rely on the power. (Later in S.1206, he slowly regained control of it thanks to he help of a pendant he received from Emma Millstein, and special training from her familiar, Celine.)
Shortly after graduating, in the spirit of his endeavors with Class VII, Rean decides to become an instructor at the newly-established Thors Branch Campus. His coworkers include Towa, his old upperclassman; Randy Orlando, who despite being an SSS member and Lloyd's partner quickly befriends Rean; Michael Irving, the stern captain of the RMP; and Aurelia Le Guin, the famed general of the former Noble Alliance.
Rean becomes the homeroom teacher of New Class VII, specializing in Special Operations. It initially consists of three students; Juna, whom he had unknowingly saved before, Kurt Vander, who joined the branch campus per his brother's request, and Altina, his former associate who chose to follow Rean to protect him from his ogre power. Rean's excellent grades as a student in the main academy allows him to convey the particulars of his subject, imperial history, with ease, and he does his best to look after his students.
The school must go through periodic field exercises, all of which (just like Rean's field studies during his time as a student) end up involving some degree of danger, specifically at the hands of Ouroboros agents. During Rean's field studies, he reunites with his former friends from the original Class VII to see what they've been up to, and also meets a number of new allies outside of Class VII, old and new. During the field studies, Rean is constantly perplexed by the identity of an enigmatic man known as Azure Siegfried, who looks and sounds almost exactly like the supposedly-deceased Crow. In-between the second and third field studies, two more students are transferred to Rean's class: Musse Egret, a well-informed noble girl with a large crush on Rean, and Ash Carbide, a wise but arrogant young man with an agenda.
In the final field study at Heimdallr, Emperor Eugent Reise Arnor III informs Rean of the truth about the Erebonian Curse, a malicious presence in the country responsible for much of its militaristic history. Soon afterwards, Ash, controlled by this same curse, shoots and nearly kills the Emperor. This leads to the appearance of the Gral of Erebos, and the shooting is framed by Osborne and his Ironbloods as an attack by a Calvardian spy that is used to gather support for the war. With the help of both Old and New Class VII - minus the arrested Ash, the kidnapped Altina, and Millium who stands with her fellow Ironbloods - Rean leads a charge into the Gral. On the way, they make it past Ouroboros agents, jaegers, Siegfried, and the Ironbloods. By the time they reach the bottom of the Gral, only he, Juna, Kurt and Musse remain.
Here, they confront Osborne and Black Alberich, the chief of the Gnomes, as well as Cedric who holds the kidnapped Altina captive. After battling the Nameless One, the purpose behind Altina's capture is made clear; she, along with Millium, is one of two beings created by the Black Workshop who is suitable for being destroyed to unleash the curse. To prevent Altina from having to be sacrificed, Millium steps in and allows herself to be murdered by the beast - this creates the Sword of the End. Seeing Millium die in front of him sends Rean into an berserk state; he (with Valimar) takes the sword, and his power now out of control, he slaughters the beast. The death of the beast causes the Great Twilight, an event that was instrumental in gathering public support for the Great War and amplified the curse's power.
Afterwards, an enraged Rean motions to attack Osborne and Alberich, but he is restrained by Crow (who has now regained his memories), Rutger, and Arianrhod, all of whom call their Divine Knights. Cedric and Osborne now summon their own Divine Knights, making six present. For a moment, Rean's senses return and he wonders what he has just done. The game ends with Osborne holding Rean in his grasp, declaring that he will now "write the end to this wretched fairy tale".
영웅전설 섬의 궤적 IV
Following his capture by Osborne, Rean is imprisoned in the Black Workshop in preparation as the Sacrifice, becoming increasingly deranged in the process. After tracking down the whereabouts of the workshop, Original and New Class VII invade the workshop using Spirit Paths from Eryn. Their presence manages to trigger something within Rean to break free from his shackles as Celine accompanies him out of concern, upon which they bump into Crow and Duvalie, who have decided to defect. Rean heads for Valimar, where he runs into his students, but ignores their presence until he realizes they intend to get in his way. After being weakened, Rean hears the thoughts of his students and friends, realizing that they care about him as he returns to normal, although his hair and eyes remain white and red respectively.
Following their escape from the workshop, Rean asks Crow and Duvalie to join, but they both refuse, with Crow stating that their Rivalry will begin soon. The witches of Eryn also give him a new uniform to help suppress his ogre power, seeing that his previous one is damaged beyond repair. Confronting Crow and Duvalie at Bryonia Island, Rean attempts to convince Crow once more, but he refuses. He and Valimar emerge victorious from the Rivalry, but refuses to absorb Ordine, as it would kill Crow. This prompts Crow to join him, along with a reluctant Duvalie.
Together with his classmates, friends and students, Rean accepts Musse's invitation to join a secret meeting on the Pantagruel. There he meets Estelle Bright and reconciles with Lloyd Bannings. He also meets with Cassius, who informs him of an upcoming trial given to him by the master which he will address when the time was right. Afterward, Rean decides to join Prince Olivert Reise Arnor's Radiant Wings movement. He helps in repelling the joint Ouroboros and Red Constellation attack, later scolding Musse for attempting a reckless solution to resolve the situation.
Before the Great War began, Rean went with his friends and allies to Mishelam Wonderland, spending what he initially believed to be his final day without any regrets. Cassius, seeing that Rean was ready, began the trial that Yun Ka-fai had prepared. Rean successfully completed his trial and is granted the title of Divine Blade, but is unable to decide on a suffix to go alongside it.
During this time, Rean prevails against the other Awakeners. However, by winning his final battle against Ishmelga he takes over not only its power, but also the curse. There are two outcomes:
In the Normal Ending, Rean, Crow and Millium sacrifice themselves by taking the curse into outer space and return to earth as nothing but feathers. Meeting certain requirements[Note 6] enables the True Ending.
In the True Ending, Rean uses the Earthen Prison[JP 2] he received from Argres to separate himself from the curse, prompting Ishmelga to manifest as an incomplete Great One. Together with Original and New Class VII, the members of the Liberlian Bracer Guild, and the Special Support Section, he defeats Ishmelga-Loge, who attempts to flee as a thought-form; Rean pursues and destroys it. Osborne then appears one last time to have a brief but heartfelt talk with his son. Before they exchange their farewells, Osborne reminds Rean of the letter he received from Yun Ka-Fai a couple of months prior:[22]
In this time of turbulence, become that flashing blade which illuminates the darkness, even if for the briefest moment. I believe you and those comrades whose souls are intertwined with yours are capable of this.[3]
Having defeated the curse and with it, the origin of his ogre power, his hair color and eyes returns to normal. He resumes his duties at Thors Branch Campus and attends the wedding of Olivert Reise Arnor and Scherazard Harvey.
During the aftermath of the normal ending, Rean and Ishmelga fought over control of their shared body, and soon became an unique existence.
영웅전설 시작의 궤적
Rean resumed his duties as Class VII's instructor following the end of the Great War. As Valimar disappeared with the other Divine Knights, Rean was provided with an experimental Tyrfing S unit, developed by Makarov, his former instructor at the main academy.
In part due to Elysium, Rean somehow regained traits similar to those when he was the Sacrifice, mostly some of his hair being white and his left eye turning yellow. While investigating the Supreme Leader, Rean also came upon a simulacrum of himself that resembled him if Ishmelga had fully taken over, who operated Zoa Gilstein, the Zeroth Divine Knight. The encounter with his copy allowed him to realize the true essence of the enemy, and he worked with both Lloyd and Rufus' teams to resolve the situation.
Prior to the events of 영웅전설 여의 궤적, his tachi is broken in half by his senior Shizuna, who was also an apprentice of Yun Ka-fai, but remained anonymous to Cassius, Arios, and Rean.
영웅전설 여의 궤적
Rean continues in his role as an instructor, and is in charge of a new Class VII. Julian is one of his students, and Rean successfully suggested for him to become an exchange student at the Calvardian Aramis Academy.
영웅전설 여의 궤적 II
Towa mentions that Rean works with Eugent Reise Arnor III to help fix many issues in Erebonia, and that she keeps in contact with him using the Round of Seven. She keeps him updated on the goings on in Calvard, including how Swin and Nadia had been getting on at Aramis.
영웅전설 계의 궤적
On invitation from Calvard, Rean travels there. At about the same time, he also receives a letter from Yun Ka-Fai, later meeting him in person for the first time in several years.
