(The Beyond에서 넘어옴)
The true form of McBurn, the Overlord of the Beyond.

The Beyond ((そと), literally "the outside") refers to the place outside of Zemuria. The Beyond operates on laws that exist outside of the world created by the Goddess,[1] known in Zemuria as Divergent Laws ((そと)(ことわり) literally "laws of the outside").

Background

The concept of Divergent Laws is introduced in 영웅전설 하늘의 궤적 SC[2] and suggests a world outside the continent of Zemuria exists. This world, the Beyond, is possibly already destroyed, as hinted at in 영웅전설 섬의 궤적 IV.[Note 1]

Zemuria and the Beyond are separated by "shackles". Interference from the Beyond in Zemuria manifests as inexplicable phenomena, most notably the Salt Pale. The consumption of Gnosis allows the user to witness the world beyond the shackles of the world,[3] as demonstrated by High Priest Joachim at the end of 영웅전설 제로의 궤적.[4] The shackles prevent travel past a certain point,[5] suggesting that the Beyond surrounds Zemuria.

The Endless Expanse is a phase space accessed in 영웅전설 여의 궤적 that acts as the boundary between Zemuria and the Beyond. Van Arkride creates a crack in this by throwing the diabolic core of Vagrants Diaspora into the distance. It was used to try and imprison the devil and prevent it from destroying the world.

The Septian Church appears to be aware of the Beyond, but attributes all the events it causes to the Goddess as a means of keeping the peace of Zemuria.[6] Examples of phenomena from the Beyond that the church attributes to Aidios include the Salt Pale and the Planes where angels and devils are said to dwell.[7]

Prior to the revelation of the Church's Saint, the only known being from the Beyond was McBurn, who merged with an unknown individual[8] upon visiting Zemuria around S.1156.[9] He is referred to as the Overlord of the Beyond by Valimar and the Grandmaster; his title in-game is Fallen Demon from the Beyond.

The Septian Church’s Book of Aricht, which is among their apocryphal scriptures, predicts the appearance of an “Eschaton Saint” shortly before the world’s end, and is understood to say that this is always a girl from the Beyond. According to the current Saint, she originally spoke a language completely alien to Zemuria, but has lost all memory of it.[10]

Divergent Laws

Divergent Laws have been associated with weapons given by the Grandmaster of Ouroboros to an Anguis or an Enforcer. Weapons crafted through Divergent Laws are capable of beating even a Sept-Terrion, as demonstrated at the end of 영웅전설 하늘의 궤적 SC.

List of known Divergent Laws weapons

  • The staff capable of controlling space, wielded by Georg Weissmann.
  • The demonic sword Angbar (アングバール), wielded by McBurn.
  • The demonic sword Kernviter (ケルンバイター), wielded by Leonhardt.

Notes

  1. After regaining his memories, McBurn states in the Japanese version that "The world I was from... is already..." The English localisation states "I spent all that time looking for answers, and it turns out...", which takes considerable liberty from the original Japanese line "……俺のいた世界は……もう……", implying that something may have happened to the Beyond during his fifty year absence. This is also brought up by the Grandmaster later, saying that McBurn, the "former Overlord of the Beyond", has realized "the truth of his home".
