Mary Altheim's story.
The daughter of Count Altheim, Mary grew up appreciating the fine arts, such as painting, sculptures and music. She opted to work as an instructor at Thors Military Academy to convey the beauty of music and art subconsciously to her students.
Mary is one of the instructors at Thors Military Academy, where she teaches primarily arts and music. She is in charge of awarding the friendships medal for those pupils who show exemplary friendship attributes from year to year. This is her first year of teaching, and Mary admits to feeling nervous about the questions she is setting. Mint, on of her students, tries to matchmake her uncle Makarov and her together, with hints that it has the potential of success.
When a situation in the Old Schoolhouse occurs, Mary helps prepare the infirmary for any injuries.The escalating political situation also results in Mary being asked to return to the family's home, however Mary refuses to do so, stating she owes it to her students.
Mary flees Trista with a number of students in tow, including Mint. they take shelter in Roer where she stays with Mint and her family. She is relieved to find out Class VII is doing well.
In the aftermath of the October War, Mary is once again teaching in the Academy. Mary agrees to take part in a fundraising concert to help the inhabitants of Celdic, whose town had seen some atrocities in the war, including to the grand market, its primary source of income.
Mary professes that she is merely friends with Makarov, despite mint's efforts, however the two share a close bond and grow ever closer. Mary's family have been telling her to settle down, and Mary states this may cut her instructor career short.
Mary was sent to Thors Branch Campus alongside Makarov and numerous main campus students. She was entrusted with a key to the training room. She met with the branch campus Class VII near the platform. She was happy to see Rean again, commenting on his growth and how he had also begun teaching. She also revealed that she was only teaching music as part of a curriculum change. She then boarded her Mordred-type Zauber Soldat and made use of a linked Sorge unit.
Upon being defeated, Mary was able to restrain the curse and gave Rean the key to the training room. Mary was worried about her students when they started to use Zauber Soldats as part of their learning curriculum. Once the situation at the branch campus was resolved, she left with the others on the Derfflinger. She later went to Mishelam Wonderland, where she was with Aurelia and Wallace. The two teased her on her relationship with Makarov, who believed she had a "discerning eye" for him, not realizing that Mint was the one who set them up.
Hoen Althiem, Mary's father arranges for her to meet Wallace Bardias about the prospect of marriage, seeing as Hoen is unconvinced of Makarov's suitability or readiness for a relationship due to the 'results' the latter is seeking. Mary and Wallace meet, and the two exchange pleasantries and catch up. Walace takes Mary to the Albion boutique, where he gives her the Margaret corsage, symbolises "true love". He doesn't press her for an answer, giving her time.
The next time they meet, Mary states she cannot accept his proposal, confessing her love for Makarov. Aurelia enters the conversation and the topic that the love might one-sided is raised. Makarov barges in, claiming his love and that, with the completion of the Tyrfing class of Panzer Soldats, he has achieved his 'results' and can indeed provide and support Mary. He kneels and proposes. Mary later comments Aurelia and Wallace may have been able to take a step forward for themselves.
Mary leads the Thors Academy students into battle against the Retributive Tower, using the Ark Royal.
