The Ancient Battlefield (古戦場(こせんじょう)) is an area in the northeast of Crossbell, best known for its ancient fortress the Sun Fort.

Background

The Ancient Battlefield is named after the countless wars between Erebonia and Calvard over the territory now known as Crossbell during the Middle Ages. Spirits of fallen soldiers still roam the battlefield. It was thoroughly investigated in S.1184, and a year later, the enormous bell found overlooking the Sun Fort, similar to the ones found in the Moon Temple and Stargazer's Tower, was moved to Crossbell City's Central Square.

The bridge connecting the Ancient Battlefield with the main road is broken and repairs aren't finished until the fourth day of the Crossbell Anniversary Festival, when two tourists from Armorica Village go missing exploring it. The Special Support Section and the Bracer Guild are called to find the tourists, whom they find separated. While Scott stays behind to protect one of them, the SSS finds the other about to be attacked by ancient monsters, too powerful for them to defeat. Arios MacLaine comes to their aid, and commends Lloyd for being able to hold out. The way to the Sun Fort remains closed, however.

The Sun Fort is finally accessed after the attack on Crossbell by brainwashed Revache and Crossbell Guardian Force members. The SSS and Chief Sergei Lou drive to the Battlefield, though the latter is injured due to gunfire from CGF vehicles that Noel Seeker ends up dispatching. Estelle and Joshua are waiting for them, having found Joachim Guenter's base in the Sun Fort and opened the way, and join the SSS to arrest the doctor.

Background

The Ancient Battlefield is closed off until Revache's old war hounds reappear to cause trouble. The SSS is asked to investigate, eliminating a hound demon from the Sun Fort that had taken control of the pack to attack humans. One of the exits of the underground passage has collapsed, making the main gateway the only access to the inner fields.

After the raid on Crossbell City, Heiyue has taken refuge in the depths of the battlefield with Rixia Mao. Lloyd, Tio, Wazy, and Zeit head to the battlefield to contact them after finding out about their resistance from Harold Hayworth in Armorica Village, but they're ambushed by the Red Constellation. Cao Lee, Rixia, and the rest of Heiyue rescue them and fight off the Red Constellation, driving them away.

Lloyd agrees to collaborate with Heiyue, on the condition that Rixia joins him. He convinces Rixia to put her wish to rejoin Arc en Ciel over her contract with Heiyue, making Cao accept its dissolution. Heiyue continues their resistance from the battlefield until the liberation of the city, after which they return to a new location.
