Like its predecessors, the player explores a variety of environs, but given the rather small size of Crossbell, there is only one major city in the game: Crossbell City. It is here that the player will do most of their shopping for equipment, items, and ingredients for cooking discovered recipes, as well as upgrade their orbments. There are, of course, other locations the player can go to via either the overworld or by taking a bus.
New additions are trading and the ability to upgrade weapons. At a certain shop in the city, the player can get quartz, accessories, and ingredients of higher quality by exchanging the required materials. Another shop allows the player to upgrade certain weapons into new ones with better stats and even an additional effect for a modest fee and the required number of a rare item called U-Material.
The game’s main story is advanced through the Special Support Section (SSS) with sidequests taken from the terminal at SSS HQ or by speaking with NPCs. Sidequests taken are reported to the Crossbell Police HQ via the terminal at SSS HQ. Completing sidequests rewards Mira, Detective Points (DP), and possibly items. Accumulating enough DP will raise the SSS’s Detective Rank and earn them rewards. Fulfilling certain conditions during quests will grant bonus DP.
Party members can attack while out on the field and hitting enemies from behind will stun them. If combat is initatied with a stunned enemy, Max Party Advantage is granted, which delays the enemy's turn further than a regular Party Advantage and guarantees a Critical AT bonus for the party for the first few turns, with a chance of a Team Rush bonus appearing. Team Rush is a new AT bonus that allows the active party to attack enemies within a target radius, similar to the Chain Craft mechanic introduced in Sky SC.
The battle system is relatively the same as previous entries, but Zero introduces a new mechanic called Support Crafts. Support Crafts are a type of craft that allows party members not in the active party to contribute to a battle. They are only used, though, in Support Turns, noted by the color green in the AT Bar. Another new addition to the battle system is Combo Crafts, which are combined attacks unique to each pair of characters.
Trivia
- In the English version of the game, a tribute to Daniel Scott Tijerina (also known as KillScottKill) was made in one of the chests in Stargazer's Tower. Tijerina was the lead editor for the Geofront who helped supply fan translations for Trails from Zero and 영웅전설 벽의 궤적 in 2020 and 2021 respectively, before the official localisation by NIS America in 2022 and 2023. His death was first announced on 10th October 2022.[1] and confirmed by his sister on 11th October 2022.[2]
- Before the release of 영웅전설 여의 궤적, Zero was the only first game of an arc to not have a cliffhanger ending (only unanswered mysteries, like the identity of Guy's killer).
- Before the release of 영웅전설 여의 궤적 II Zero was the only first game to not feature Olivert Reise Arnor in any capacity. Only one mention of a "Debaucherous Prince" by Lechter in Chapter 3.
