Causality Recording Engine 03, AZOTH (第03因果律記述機関AZOTH) is an artifact system that records cause and effect. Thus far its only known application has been the Black Records.
AZOTH being referred to as the third engine implies there are at least two more like it.
Background
Around the time of the Great Collapse, Adjudicator Arnor activates AZOTH and starts its recording of events in Erebonia. It would do so for 1206 years until registering what it believed to be the end of the world. The system terminates its task, stopping its recording before the end of the Great War. The system describes, but is unable to take into consideration the illogical nature of humanity.
Its identity as the author of the Black Records would not be described until the thirteenth and final volume, which would fall into the hands of Marcel Nielsen and through Thomas Lysander's translation end up with Rean Schwarzer.

AZOTH's duty should have finished once the Great Twilight ended. However, due to the birth of the Singularity Elysium and the danger it posed to cause and effect, AZOTH is forced to wake up and predicts that in this time, it is not possible for people to defeat Elysium. For the first time in 1200 years, AZOTH has finally decided to directly intervene by assisting the three protagonists and their corresponding companions in developing their potential and skills. It creates a new phase space similar to the Phantasma and invites three main protagonists and their groups to challenge its Reverie Corridor. Even though people would not remember this place once they return to the real world, the strength and power in any form they develop can be brought with them. Since the people come and leave the plane almost at the same minute, their growth in strength is unexpected by Elysium, thus creating a chance for humans to defeat the singularity.
After the defeat of Elysium, AZOTH finds itself unable to shut down the programs of Reverie Corridor. Under the investigations of the guests, they realize that Elysium recreated Demiourgos as trump card against AZOTH beforehand. After they free Demiourgos and allow her to return to slumber, AZOTH is finally able to access all the programs of the Reverie Corridor. Before AZOTH also goes into eternal slumber, it allows the guests to take back the some of the experience in this fictional world in the form of a dream, hoping it will help them in the future. Also, AZOTH declares that there still exists greater threats in Zemuria and in the future AZOTH would not be able to activate itself again and offer help. It wish all the best for the people and hope their friendship and bonds make meaningful choices and overcome new challenges.

- In alchemy, Azoth (al-zā'būq, "the mercury") symbolises the universal. The A and Z in Azoth relate to the Greek 'alpha' and 'omega', the beginning and end of all things.
