Background
Years ago, Zack used to live together in Manoria with Amelia and their uncle Orvid, but Orvid moved out years ago. Zack doesn't get along with him very well and Amelia thinks that's the reason Orvid doesn't drop by very often anymore.
At some point, Zack became a dock worker in Ruan's harbor, but he later got fired at some point and returned to his hometown Manoria, moving in with his sister Amelia. Despite the fact that he moved there because he lost his job, he's happy to be in his hometown again, though he doesn't like the fact that his sister's now fussing and worrying over him being unemployed all day long.
Not wanting to sit around all day doing nothing and having known Matron Theresa since he was a kid, he's been visiting the nearby Mercia Orphanage to help her out with the manual labor whenever she needs a strong helping hand.

When Mercia Orphanage caught fire, Zack and Solomon tried to put out the fire, though they were too late to save the building. The next morning the two men are already at the site of the building to clean up the debris.
When Matron Theresa gets robbed while on her way back from the school festival at Jenis Royal Academy, it's Zack who runs all the way from Manoria to Ruan to warn the Bracer Guild (due to the phone lines being down). On his way there, he runs into Estelle, Joshua and Kloe who promptly head for Manoria while sending him to Jean to report.
Throughout the orphans' ordeal, Zack shows himself to be a reliable man and even his sister acknowledges that afterwards.

In 달의 문 5 "행복의 돌" Zack participates in the bazaar, a part of profits from which goes to the Mercia Orphanage.
