1st Lieutenant Riel is a soldier serving in the Royal Army.
He's part of the Royal Army's 3rd regiment and he's participating in the Martial Arts Competition in Grancel together with three of his men (the competition used to be restricted to members of the army and more an evaluation of soldiers' skills than a public event).
He and his team, of which is he is the captain, make it through the preliminaries and are introduced in the waiting room where the participants of the blue side wait for their turn to do battle. During the quarter-finals, he and his men are pitted against the Capua Sky Bandits. While he and his fellow soldiers put up a good fight and he personally manages to subdue Lyall, who's fighting alongside his bosses, they're no match for the power of Don Capua's orbal cannon and after his men all fall to the Capua leader's explosive shots, Riel gets taken out by Kyle Capua's smoke bombs.
He's quite dismayed that he and his team lost to a group of criminals and after his fellow officer 1st Lieutenant Bern reminds him that the Capuas are simply used to fighting as a group, Riel replies that it's not so much the sky bandits' strength, but simply his team's weakness. He decides to treat his defeat as a wakeup call and vows to engage in some heavy training together with his men in order to become stronger and function better as a unit.
