Synopsis

2/17| Three days after Crossbell City was liberated by the Special Support Section, Carl Regnitz sends a detachment of the Government Accountability Inspectorate to the city, led by Inspectors Machias Regnitz and Reiner to oversee cleanup efforts due to the stubbornness of the Imperial remnants. As Machias looks over the damage and reports, he spots a familiar green-haired man, Alex Dudley, speaking with a few people. Machias is exhausted from the day's events, looking forward to a cup of coffee the next day.

As Machias continues his work and enjoys his coffee each day, during one of his visits, the server informs him that they have run out of the requested coffee. Machias is surprised just as the green-haired man comes over and inquires; the two then speak to the owner. The owner redirects them to the airport, where an employee tells them that packages and deliveries haven't been arriving on time or getting mixed up as they recently reopened for international trade.

As the pair leave, they conclude that everything is completely off but the people don't appear to suspect it. The two introduce themselves to each other, having learned of the other through reports. Dudley states that he was supposed to have a day off, but because his coffee is being threatened, he has no other choice but to investigate who is disturbing his quality of life. Dudley then asks Machias if he would like to help in the private investigation, who accepts his offer.

The pair first head to the department store, where Machias asks Patiry to help inquire about recent trades. After visiting the store, they meet with Harold, ending with a visit to Ashleigh. She tells them there had been a shifty supply line that she had dealt with earlier. The two are surprised with how deep the problem is when a drunken man approaches the two, berating the Erebonian government for returning the city to its original title, the City of Sin. His friend soon arrives and apologizes to the pair. The pair asks the man a few questions regarding the goods, who tells them that he's heard rumors of a shady merchant having set up shop and that the shops have bought their knock-off high-quality goods, hurting their businesses. He gives them a list of said stores, which they immediately visit.

With all of the stores investigated, the pair spot a familiar pattern; various high-quality goods are "magically" out of stock, just as a merchant appears and offers them discounted goods, which are cheap knock-offs. Machias is slightly troubled by the events, prompting Dudley to reassure him that it wasn't his fault. Dudley states that Machias reminds him of his youth, as they both share a similar mindset in performing their duties to the best they can, and tells him not to rush himself.

Pete then comes in and tells the pair that he remembered that there was a similar incident a few years ago that the SSS had dealt with and that the documents related to the case were still on file. Reading the documents, they are soon able to discover their suspects. The two suspects are later seen at the pier; Minnith and a woman, celebrating the success of their scams in Crossbell. The pair then confront them and their bodyguards, who try to call in reinforcements as they loathe the SSS for ruining their "careers". However, most of the reinforcements have been intercepted, leaving a few to defend them, who Machias and Dudley easily defeat. Minnith shoots Dudley, successfully disarming him, but to his surprise, Dudley charges and tackles him into submission. The woman tries to flee on an orbal boat, but Machias had already sabotaged the engine beforehand. They and their lackeys are soon arrested and the supply routes return to normal.

The next day, the two return to the cafe and enjoy their coffee. Dudley wishes to speak with Machias more and offers him lunch and coffee later on, which he accepts.
