1st Lieutenant Bern, a NPC met in Grancel

1st Lieutenant Bern is a soldier serving in the Royal Army.

He's part of 7th regiment of the Royal Army's Border Patrol Garrison and he's participating in the Martial Arts Competition in Grancel together with three of his men (the competition used to be restricted to members of the army and more an evaluation of soldiers' skills than a public event).

He and his team, of which is he is the captain, make it through the preliminaries and are introduced in the waiting room where the participants of the blue side wait for their turn to do battle. With General Morgan (who's active in the same division) not attending, Bern is determined to bring honor to his division in his place. He witnesses his colleague, 1st Lieutenant Riel, get beaten by the Capua Sky Bandits and makes an attempt to cheer him up afterwards. Vowing to do better than his unfortunate fellow officer, he gives his team one final pep talk before entering the ring, but unfortunately he and his men are pitted against the much stronger Intelligence Division's special ops team led by 2nd Lieutenant Lorence.

Upon seeing his men get pummeled hard by the special ops soldiers and doing little damage in return, Bern makes a beeline for Lorence in the hopes of quickly taking him down, but Lorence rushes past him and finishes off all three of his teammates with three swift slices of his blade before anyone can even react. Bern's fate is sealed when all three special ops gang up on him immediately afterwards and brutally beat him into submission before he can even get an attack of his own in.
