The city of Zeiss (工房都市(こぼうとし)ツァイス), also known as the Industrial City, is the regional capital of the Zeiss region in Liberl.

Background

Zeiss is the heart of Liberl's orbment industry thanks to the efforts of Professor Albert Russell, native of the city, one of the three disciples of C. Epstein and now considered father of the Orbal Revolution in Liberl. Zeiss is now known as one of the greatest cities for industrialisation, orbmental technology and development, and cooperation with the Epstein Foundation. Notable landmarks include its escalators, the Zeiss Central Factory and the home of Professor Russell.

Towering high above the city streets is the Zeiss Central Factory where everything orbment-related, from lighting fixtures to airships, is mass-produced, repaired and sold. The factory is so integral to the city and the region that the chief of the factory also serves the duties of mayor. Its workers are known to be amongst the continent's best orbment craftsmen, which has sparked a lot of international interest and has put the ZCF's products on the same level of notoriety as those of the Reinford Group and the Verne Company.

History

Previous to the Orbal Revolution, Zeiss was instead known for clockmaking. After Russell's return from Leman, he partnered with the clockmakers of Zeiss to establish the Zeiss Engineering Factory, which would later become the Central Factory.

During the Hundred Days War, Zeiss is one of the regions in Liberl which was captured and occupied by Erebonian forces. Although the Central Factory was occupied, the professor managed to continue his development of airships in Leiston Fortress, which proved critical for Liberl's counterattack.

Background

Estelle and Joshua travel to Zeiss to continue their bracer training and to find out more about the mysterious black orbment entrusted to them by Cassius that saved their lives before. After stopping by the Bracer Guild and speak with the chief of the factory Murdock, Tita Russell, who the two met on the way, takes them to Professor Russell.

There they experiment with the orbment, which causes a blackout over the entire city. The professor sends the pair with Tita to Elmo Village to fix a problem there while he experiments in the Central Factory's workshop, but when they return, the factory is engulfed in smoke and the professor seems to be missing. Inside, they meet again with Agate, they identify the source of the smoke as deployed canisters and conclude that the professor has been kidnapped and the black orbment taken with him.

At the guild, Professor Alba gives them information of a suspicious bunch roaming in Carnelia Tower, which they find to be the same soldiers in black they've met before taking the professor with him, but they fail to rescue him. Agate ends up poisoned due to their attacks, and the priest from the Septian Church sends them and a newly arrived calvardian bracer, Zin Vathek, to find an ingredient for an antitoxin.

While Agate recuperates, Dorothy shows a picture at the guild of the same airship that the soldiers fled on heading to Leiston Fortress, but they turn Estelle and Joshua away. The bracers deduce that the professor is held in the fortress after a malfunction in the gate shows similar signs to the blackout from before, and together with the engineers at the Central Factory devise a plan to rescue him.

After the rescue is successful, Agate and Tita stay in hiding with the professor while Estelle and Joshua are sent to Grancel to speak with Queen Alicia on his behalf. When they try to take an airship, they find that the Intelligence Division, the source of the soldiers in black, is already looking to detain them, and they decide to make their way on foot to the capital.

Background

Right after Estelle arrives from Ruan after her investigation there, Zeiss is hit by an earthquake. The characteristics of the earthquakes affecting the region are unusual enough for the bracers to suspect Ouroboros of being behind them, and they collaborate with the engineers of the Central Factory and Professor Russell once again to locate the source, which turns out to be near Elmo Village.

During Ouroboros' assault on the cities while the Enforcers work on the Tetracyclic Towers, Zeiss is shown as one of the cities most heavily assaulted by Ouroboros' ground forces, with the Royal Army able to push them back.

During the country-wide Orbal Shutdown Phenomenon that happens afterwards, the escalators of Zeiss stop moving and the Central Factory is unable to continue working. The Zeiss Bracer Guild is one of the guilds where Estelle and Joshua have to restore communications using a Zero Field Generator. In addition, Kilika asks to check on Elmo Village due to the lack of communication.

• Carl Zeiss was a German maker of scientific instruments and entrepreneur. Zeiss is also the brand name of the company he founded. The Japanese katakana used to transcribe the city's and region's name correspond to the German pronunciation.
