Helmuth is an inhabitant of the town of Grancel.
He lives in a house in the northern section of the royal city together with his wife Norche.
He and his colleagues Palmer, Dayan and Tooker are government officials who usually work at the castle as part of the country's administration, but during the Intelligence Division's coup, he and Palmer were sent on a forced vacation by Duke Dunan. Since he can't go to work, he decides to spend all his free time by fishing instead.
Fishing is more than a hobby to Helmuth. It's more like an obsession for him and the upper floor of his house is filled with fish trophies and fishing rods. Recently, he's heard about the existence of a Fisherman's Guild in Grancel and, hoping to become a member and meet kindred spirits, he decided to take the Guild's entrance exam. Much to his disappointment, he doesn't manage to pass it though.
Due to his fixation on fishing, Helmuth is rather neglectful of his wife. While his job doesn't leave him with much free time to begin with, whenever he's at home he only tends to talk to his wife about his hobby, if he even talks to her at all. He's used to the fact that Norche frequently takes trips to other cities to ease her loneliness together with their neighbor Marian, but one day, his wife suddenly disappears without even informing him of where she's headed.
Helmuth's unease turns to worry as his wife doesn't come home that evening and the next day either and he eventually puts in a request at the Bracer Guild, but rather than immediately posting it, Elnan tells him to simply wait for her to come home on her own, much to Helmuth's frustration. The next day, he's so beside himself with worry, he's promising himself he'll even give up fishing if it'll get him his wife back and he's wondering out loud whether the "terrorists" kidnapped her.
It turns out, however, that Norche wasn't kidnapped after all. She simply decided to try her hand at her husband's obsession herself, went out fishing on her own and ended up enjoying it so much she completely forgot the time. What's more, she turns out to be a natural at it and, to Helmuth's horror, passes the Fisherman's Guild's entrance exam that he failed on her first try.
After the Intelligence Division's coup is thwarted, all the expelled government officials return to the castle's administration office, Helmuth among them. He notes that with all the work he has to catch up with, there won't be much time for fishing anytime soon. In the meantime at home, his wife is voicing her determination to stay the superior angler of the two, delivering some karmic comeuppance to her husband.
