그렌델's story.
Background
The exact circumstances surrounding Grendel's origin and nature are yet to be revealed. Van originally takes on the form when in a life-threatening situation and continues to use it when facing formidable opponents. Upon its first usage, the AI from his holo core 메어 manifests in the real world and displays sentience that should not be possible under normal circumstances. Mare asks Van whether he will 'bear the nightmare' or not each time she is invoked and waits for a response.
카트르 살리시온 describes it as being composed of extremely high density shards. Later, it is revealed to be a form of restraint that separates Van from 바그란츠 자이온.

During 서장 "구시가지의 뒷세계 해결사", Grendel first manifests when 반 아크라이드 struggles to pull through and protect 아니에스 클로델 against two drug-enhanced members of 아르마타. At this time, his 자이파's holo core 메어 appears after Agnès' great-grandfather's Genesis glows.
Mare cautions Van about overusing or being too eager to use the form. Upon trying to use the form in 살바드, Van instead glows red and an error seems to occur, leaving Van reeling in pain. A voice tells him that he scarcely needs to bear the nightmare, as he is himself the nightmare.
When trying to extract answers about Grendel from Mare, the party calls her out in 디르크 기념공원 while fighting Lagrantula. Although they cannot comprehend everything Mare states, they discover she is influenced by something external and is therefore able to lend power to Van. Should Van overuse it, he will become something else.
Two alternative forms of Grendel, Darkness-Forging Armored Demon: Grendel Alter and Darkness-Roused Armored Demon: Grendel Shin, are used in 제5장 "백야의 카르나발" and 종장 "언젠가 돌아올 당신을 위해", respectively.

Van enters Grendel's true form when fighting Overlord Dantès, Grendel Shin. Using this form, he is able to take back the diabolic core from Dantès, but in doing so he truly becomes Vagrants Diaspora. Mare states this is Van "casting off his restraints as Grendel and embracing his true self."
Van would later don this form to fight his demonic self and use it to cast the core into the reaches of the 무한의 틈새.
영웅전설 여의 궤적 II
Grendel is used to fight against 그렌델 졸가 and its own holo core AI Altera at the Republican Army Garrison. During their stay on 네메스 섬, Van dons this form once again to fight against Grendel Zolga and manages to grab one of the Geneses when they all flew to the 가든 마스터 due to the influence of the completed eighth Genesis. The two Grendels face off one last time in the 옥트 라듐 where Van counters Grendel Zolga's S-Craft with his own S-Craft, delivering the final blow.
Van is able to bear the nightmare against the boss of each floor in the 메르헨 가르텐.
