The Valis Investment Bank (ヴァリス投資銀行) is a major financial institution headquartered in the Central Eastern coastal city-state of Valis. Over the past decade, the bank has rapidly grown in influence, leveraging wealth amassed through extensive maritime trade in the Southern Sea to establish itself as a key player in global investments.

Background

Valis, while geographically small, has harnessed its strategic location and maritime prowess as a port city to rapidly generate immense wealth through commerce in the Southern Sea. This fortune has allowed the Valis Investment Bank to make aggressive investments across Zemuria, causing significant shifts in the Central East's power dynamics. Historically, the Principality of Elsaim had been the region's economic powerhouse, known for its abundant natural resources, its role as a diplomatic leader, and initiatives like desert reforestation. However, Valis' growing financial strength and strategic investments are challenging Elsaim's hegemony

In early S.1208, the Valis Investment Bank would overtake the Ludos Development Bank of Elsaim - previously the Central East's dominant financial institution - as well as the Kowloon Financial Bank in total assets. This marked a significant shift in the region's economic landscape, signaling Valis' growing economic influence. While the ruling family of Elsaim remains steadfast, some of its nobles and cabinet ministers have expressed concerns over the bank's aggressive investment strategies. This has gradually heightened tensions in the Central East, with Prince Sherid Asval noting that Elsaim and Valis now share a complex relationship, viewing each other as both allies and rivals simultaneously.

Economic Influence and Investments

Central East Rivalry

The bank is the largest shareholder in Marduk Total Security Company, a leading defense firm based in the Ored State. This unexpected move blindsided the royal family of Elsaim, who had assumed that Valis would focus its wealth on unifying local tribes in the Central East. This decision exemplifies the bank's unpredictable and flexible investment strategy, making it challenging for Elsaim—and other major economic players like the Kowloon Financial Bank—to anticipate its next steps. As Valis continues to diversify its portfolio and expand its influence across Zemuria, many smaller tribes and nations in the Central East are increasingly aligning with Valis, seeing it as a viable alternative to Elsaim's traditional dominance. Given the deep financial connections between Calvard and Elsaim, economists within the Republic worry that Valis' aggressive expansion could have repercussions beyond the Central East.

The key facet of the banks investment strategy is targeting land owners, specifically leaders of the various tribes in the Central East—many of whom have historically aligned with the principality's royal family—offering them substantial financial backing in exchange for access to their land's valuable resources. Leaders like Patriarch Bashar, whose tribal lands border Calvard and Elsaim, have eagerly accepted Valis' capital, using it to invest in Tharbad and gain control over critical trade routes leading into Calvard. In contrast, Patriarch Dahar has firmly rejected Valis' overtures, remaining loyal to the royal family of Elsaim. This divide not only highlights the growing internal tensions within the region but also demonstrates Valis' expanding influence—not just over Elsaim's control of the Central East, but also over the broader trade network connected to Calvard.

Valis has also heavily invested in ore deposits across Elsaim. This is shown with Mourad, a citizen of Elsaim approached by Valis with lucrative deals to conduct geological surveys and secure mining rights on his ancestral lands. Mourad - who previously worked with Elsaim's royal family - was swayed by Valis' promise to offer him twice the amount Elsaim was paying him. This, along with additional lavish benefits Valis would throw on top of their offer to sweeten the deal such as all-inclusive vacations, convinced Mourad to turn his back on the royal family of Elsaim and permit Valis to utilize his lands' rich mineral resources.

Technological Investments

The Valis Investment Bank played a crucial role in funding the Verne Company's collaboration with the Central Intelligence Department to develop a civilian model of the sixth-generation combat orbment, Xipha. This secretive project has the potential to revolutionize the orbment market and further extend Valis' influence in Calvard. The Valis Investment Bank's involvement in the project isn't public knowledge as the Tyrell Times reports the various organizations funding Verne are "unclear."
