Carmine Altera's story.
Background
She can resonate with the Eighth Genesis possessed by a mysterious man in a black coat and hat, and with a vast number of shards, can transform that man into the powerful creature Grendel Zolga. In general, Altera is analogous to Mare, Van Arkride's Holo Core, which is capable of turning him into Grendel.
It is revealed towards the end of the game that Altera's true identity is Lapis Rosenberg, and she was created after the Gardenmaster used the Eighth Genesis to borrow Elysium's source code and corrupt Lapis (its administrator). He needed an AI that would be capable of performing the high-speed calculations needed to manifest the shard form of Zolga, and Elysium's source code, within Lapis, was the only feasible option. At some points, she seems to question her identity, but the Gardenmaster is able to force her to follow his commands against her will. After he is defeated, she is restored as Lapis, and remains a Holo Core AI.

Altera first appears alongside Grendel-Zolga as it slaughters the unit of Hercules. When Van Arkride and Elaine Auclair confront Zolga, Altera is noticed. Mare states she has no connection to the new holo core.
Elaine, Swin Abel and Nadia Rayne confront Altera again in the Blacklight District where she is tending to a recreated copy of the Aurora supercomputer that was stolen from the Thirteen Factories. She manifests Demi-Grendels to fight the party and successfully kills them all twice in abandoned timelines before the group successfully recruits Walter to assist them. Nadia and Swin recognise the feeling of Lapis Rosenberg about Altera and try to press her for answers.
They later get the opportunity when they meet Altera beneath Aramis Academy alongside Gardenmaster and Grendel Zolga. After the battle, she seems to recollect memories and that group surmise that she is in fact using Lapis' code but Gardenmaster reboots her AI and she loses her memories once again, before leaving.
It is after Nadia and Swin confront Altera for the third time that they finally restore her after a spiritual Ace Rayne leaves them a parting gift. From this point on, she ceases to act as Alter and is once again Lapis, albeit still in in holo core AI form, losing the crimson colour scheme and returning to a palette of black with heterochromatic eyes.

When Lapis, Rufus, and Kevin Graham drink energy drinks in Tharbad, the arginine in the drink causes Lapis to get "drunk", allowing Altera to take over. She demands more energy drinks, with Kevin having to step in to prevent Rufus from getting her more. She runs around the town and has fun, such as playing in the swimming pool of the Al-Jumeriah Hotel and even gambles. She cheats to win at the slot machines, causing Kevin to force them to run away and leave the money behind so that they didn't get in trouble. She tires herself out and falls asleep, with Lapis able to re-gain control. Rufus backs up her data from this event and turns it into a Holo Core.
