The Vestiges

Vestiges (known in the Japanese version as Remnant) are a mysterious collective of preexisting individuals drawn from the past, present, and future who by all conventional logic, should not exist in the present.

The Vestiges play a major role during events in Trails beyond the Horizon

Overview

The Vestiges include individuals originating from different points in time. Unlike the hypothetical constructs produced in the Elysium system which simulate potential outcomes and paradoxes—the Vestiges are real, preexisting individuals drawn from different points in time all coexisting within a single temporal plane. Because of this unnatural existence, they refer to themselves as “indefinite beings.” According to Harwood, the Vestiges are people who feel lost or left behind by society, losing sight of where they belong, and for whom neither good nor evil holds meaning anymore in their lives.

Origins & Purpose

The emergence of the Vestiges is closely tied to the events surrounding Project Startaker. When the project was publicly announced, Professor Latoya Hamilton became concerned that President Roy Gramheart’s plan could cause Laegjarn's Chest to accelerate the advance of the Grand Reset ahead of schedule. According to René Kincaid, Vestiges and related e-Factor contamination events exist due to temporal disturbances triggered by the looming threat to the Cradle of Time. He describes them as: “Fluctuations that emerged in response to the prospect of the Cradle’s destruction… aftershocks from the past and future.”

Harwood noted depending on the outcome President Gramheart's plan Project Startaker also known as Project Lævateinn the Vestiges would return to oblivion where they came from or be restored to history once again.

In response, Hamilton enacted a contingency plan of her own. By this point, space-time had already become significantly destabilized due to the combined actions of multiple parties across Zemuria—including Hamilton herself. Taking advantage of this instability, she would create replica versions of the Geneses - known as Alter Cores - to alter the principals of causality. The Vestiges would be tasked with using these Alter Cores to intentionally trigger chaotic events throughout Zemuria, or drive “lynchpins,” into space-time, presumably to further destabilize it.

One of these chaotic events is the creation of the A∴D Cult, standing for Alter Dawn. Like the Vestiges, those drawn to the cult are mainly those who feel lost or ousted by society.

Abilities

The Alter Cores grant the Vestiges several powerful and unusual capabilities:

• Executor Control – Enable command over the Executors and can create Demi-Executors, a variant characterized as having both human and mechanical traits due to contamination by organic nanomachines. This process occurs in Jeffrey Valentino and one of the Devancy Brothers.
• Space-Time Leaps – A form of instantaneous teleportation that differs from Eastern Dunjia techniques or the Society’s translocation methods. These disregard the usual laws of causality and conservation of mass, allowing them to travel freely between locations. During leaps the user effectively ceases to exist in the world for a brief moment before reappearing elsewhere.

Individuals

Several individuals have been identified as members of the Vestiges:

• Masked Apostle – Primary member of the Vestiges. He was given the Alter Cores by Professor Hamilton to drive in the lynchpins to destabilize space-time. Revealed to be Melchior
• Ixs Eldarion - Recent new Enforcer XX-a of Ouroboros and one of the few member who is still living. It is implied that he was recruited into the Vestiges by Melchior. Burdened by lifelong trauma and uncertain of his place in society, he was likely drawn to the Vestiges’ cause, finding meaning in their goal of ushering in a “new dawn.”
• Masked Martial Artist - Clad in a red aura, displays overwhelming prowess in the Gekka style, bearing down on all those around him with his dominating aura. Revealed to be Lagun Khan, “The Tyrant,” who ruled over Langport 40 years ago.
• Masked Soldier – A mysterious woman clad in green aura who fights using advanced, seemingly unheard-of technology such as a pulse rifle and plasma mines. Her combat style feels strangely familiar to Feri. The bottom half of her face is revealed when her mask gets broken, showing she has a tanned complexion.
• Masked Instigator - Portly middle-aged man who is crude in both speech and behavior with a talent for information manipulation. Revealed to be Giacomo Conte.
• Arioch - Appears briefly near the end of the game during a confrontation with Walter and Zin. At some point, his artifact, the Fangs of Rahu, was apparently stolen after it had been taken into Ouroboros’ possession. The artifact had previously been recovered by Lucrezia Isselee following the events involving the Gardenmaster and stored aboard the Crimson Ark, though the circumstances surrounding its disappearance remain unknown.
• Olympia - Appears briefly near the end of the game during a confrontation with Walter and Zin. At some point, her artifact, Ishtanti, was apparently stolen after it had been taken into Ouroboros’ possession. The artifact had previously been recovered by Lucrezia Isselee following the events involving the Gardenmaster and stored aboard the Crimson Ark, though the circumstances surrounding its disappearance remain unknown.
• Masked Swordswoman – A graceful yet resolute young woman whose presence inspires awe. She fights with a knightly sword.
• Masked Swordsman – A tall, powerfully built Vestige who radiates extraordinary energy. He wields a large saber in combat.
• Masked Caster – A Vestige who appears before Kevin and his companions. An exceptionally skilled magic user who seems to possess the abilities of a powerful sorcerer, though his demeanor suggests something unusual.
