The Great Collapse (大崩壊) is a catastrophic event affecting the entire continent of Zemuria that led to the destruction of the ancient Zemurian civilisation and plunged survivors into a dark age of ruin and enter S.0. The event marks the end of the Pre-Septian Calendar and the start of the Septian Calendar.
The Congregation for the Sacraments of the Septian Church is tasked with the retrieval of artifacts, orbal relics from before the Great Collapse, on which the post-Orbal Revolution orbal technology is based. However, the development of orbal arts was far from superior to the development before the Great Collapse.
Among the ancient dragons that lived before the Great Collapse, only Ragnard is known to have survived into the Septian Calendar era.
At present there are four known separate events all said to be parts, or direct results of, the collapse:
- In Liberl, the Aureole, Sept-Terrion of Space, gains autonomy and begins to negatively impact human lives, forcing it to be sealed away.
- In Crossbell, the Demiourgos, Sept-Terrion of Mirage, experiences deterioration of its heart and decides to erase itself from existence.
- In the Land of Erebos, the Ark Rouge, Sept-Terrion of Fire, and Lost Zem, Sept-Terrion of Earth, engage in a thousand-day battle and fuse into the Great One.
- In the boundary of space, the Laegjarn, Sept-Terrion of Time, activates the Grand Reset protocol in S.1209 that restarts the S.0 timeline previously.
Causation Hypotheses
The Trial of the Goddess
The Congregation for Divine Worship of the Septian Church has theorised that the Great Collapse might have been a trial by Aidios, the Goddess in the Sky. The purpose of the theorised trial is to stimulate humanity to develop new perspectives on life. During the dark ages that followed after the Great Collapse, humanity learned to understand the infinite cycles of life, such as the cycle from day to night, summer to winter, and from seed to harvest. The Septian Church believes that with each turn, the world became a better place for humanity.
Natural Disaster
While no specifics were given, some inhabitants of Zemuria assume the Great Collapse was a massive natural disaster.
Causation
It's revealed at the end of 제III부 "운명을 향한 카운트다운" that once humanity reaches the boundary of space the Sept-Terrion of Time that fabricates the celestial sphere, Laegjarn's Box, activates the Grand Reset (グランドリセツト) protocol which reverts the Zemuria dimension's time back to S.0. The latest Grand Reset on July 12, S.1209 initiates an imperfect time loop trial, such as F. Novartis in the previous reset no longer being the sole disciple of Claude Epstein. The current Epstein notices this irregularity decades before the Grand Reset and initiates the type.Claudel protocol through his Oct-Geneses to ensure a glimpse of hope for Zemuria and Zemurians.
