The Tragedy of Hamel was a massacre in the village of Hamel that took place on 23 April of S.1192, which formed the casus belli of the Hundred Days War.
The incident
On the night of April 23rd, S.1192, an armed group of jaegers dressed in black attacked Hamel, a border village in the southern region of the Erebonian Empire. Using Liberlian equipment, they raped and slaughtered all the inhabitants they found. Only a handful of people including Joshua Astray and Leonhardt were able to escape. In truth, the attack was orchestrated by a militarist faction in the Empire, using jaegers provided by 게오르그 와이스만. The militarists used the supposed atrocity by Liberlian forces as a pretext to invade their neighboring kingdom, starting the Hundred Days War.
Aftermath
During the peace talks ending the war, Liberl and Erebonia agreed to cover up the incident. The Empire quietly executed the officials implicated in the plot, and created the cover story that Hamel was destroyed in a landslide.
The young Joshua was so traumatized by the incident and the resulting death of his sister Karin, he became unable to do anything but play his dead sister's harmonica. Weissmann approached Leonhardt, then Joshua's caretaker, and offered to treat Joshua in return for Leonhardt and Joshua joining Ouroboros.
